The issue I see with Avaloren conceptually, is that the only pitch they can go for is that it's new.
Most players have probably not read the book. One of the books is only on the PTR even. Tyr has still not been revived, so they cannot talk about whatever happened in that quest.

They would have to depend entirely on the zones being interesting brought that we should want to go there. Which is a tall ask when there are so many questlines in EK and Kalimdor that are begging to be explored.

Everything at some point didn't feel like Warcraft until it did. It's mostly about execution.

Stuff like Shadowlands was a goatfuck. Mists, YMMV, I think it came out great. But they weren't intrinsically less Warcraft just by existing.

Are we gonna keep saying this shit about everything that isn't EK or Kalimdor related? Cause it's starting to get tiring.

Also, if Avaloren is about Avalon, then it's about Arthur, fairies, witches, knights and round tables. Putting aside Beowulf, you can't get more "traditional" medieval fantasy, unless you count LoTR as the foundation of it all. (in which case they're missing out on great historical literature / background / histories).

As before, there's a high chance the expansion was already leaked but we just didn't pay it any heed/dismissed it.

So of all the leaks, are there any that excite you based on the concept?

The artificer leaks have me cautiously excited. I think it could be a worthy compromise to Tinkers. Though I have serious doubts we're getting a new class.

People were hyped for Draenor.
People were SUPER hyped for Argus.
People were reasonably hyped for Shadowlands.
People are hyped for K'aresh and constantly speculate about it and the Ethereals.

People do want Cosmic settings, what people don't want is Cosmic villains with 5000IQ masterplans who retroactively insert themselves into every previous storyline.

Frankly, my complaints have been gradually shifting away from thinking that they're writing a story that doesn't fit the Warcraft setting, and more that they're just struggling to write a story period. I'm not expecting Metzen to make a huge difference, but it feels like most of the problems stem from a lack of direction, so who knows.

How I see it is that people want cosmic storylines, but experienced through the lens of the familiarity of Azeroth and the characters we know.

Legion worked because we mostly stuck to Azeroth. Learning more about the world, and saw the effects the invasion had on places and people we knew.

Shadowlands didn't because while the topic was expected, you didn't get a solid frame of reference to how this affects Azeroth and the people there.
