I think the reasoning is that, similar to Legion, the bulk of launch content will not be about fighting the void outside of concentrated areas. Like Legion, it'll be elf wonderworld (for the most part) and fighting zone threats before we course correct to purple poo.
I think this heavily points towards the first raid being Scourge and/or Amani instead of void, as a palate cleanser.
I think it's another reason why they announced the Saga to begin with; this swerve is far easier to digest if players understand that the expansion is part one of an overarching three-part story. It's not like in WoD where the expansion suddenly because about the Legion which in hindsight made sense after, well, Legion was revealed but at first seemed like an anticlimatic asspull.
I'm letting Blizzard cook. Albeit I'd really like an Ethereal Mage or Rogue and would be disappointed if the race never becomes playable despite all the pieces seemingly being there.

The internet: where to every action is opposed an unequal overreaction.
About whether Karesh fits the War Within: it depends on how Blizzard sells the story. If the story is about how much Karesh's world soul suffered before its destruction, this patch can show the process (and maybe list the signs) of how the Void Lords possess a world soul.
For example: 1. Karesh started to bleed ("azerite"), 2. Karesh screamed for help (the song), 3. Karesh cannot hold the infection: creatures were corrupted by the void, 4. The fever is too high: the elements go crazy around the world, 6. Karesh is dying: earthquakes and void energy surges around the world.
This patch can set the signs for Midnight.
My prediction
- I agree; the Dark Heart will trap Dimensius. Whether he is used to infect Azeroth or to upgrade Xal remains to be seen.
- I think Midnight will be a race to control Azeroth. The void will attack the Rootlands, and the Void will start to betray each other.
- I think we will have 3 contenders: Xal/Dimensius, Azshara and Nzoth. I think Nzoth will appear last, trying to possess Azeroth on the very last minute.
- I think the Void will keep winning during Midnight. If Xal is defeated is because Azshara raised to power and so on. Maybe we got some Void allies who think it isn't the right time to conquer Azeroth.
- The Void will be defeated because all the Titan's machines will activate a last firewall that even the Void Lords weren't able to predict.
Let's find out more about these Void Demon Hunters ... If they're added, and Void Elves can play them, I might actually roll one.
