Same, but in retrospect it should have been obvious. Classic has enough directors already & they said they were looking for a head narrative director for Warcraft right before he announced he was returning. "Head Creative Director" for Metzen makes sense.

Metzen's title is for the Warcraft franchise, Danuser's is for World of Warcraft.

I also think a major difference is the fact that Metzen is involved with the story aspects of the entire franchise, while Danuser is just on WoW?

So for example if they're making an RPG, or WoW 2, Metzen is also a producer on that.

is Danuser just Lead Narrative Designer of WoW? Because Metzen is Executive Creative Director of the Warcraft universe. So that means retail AND classic WoW and potentially other non-WoW Warcraft things. Like WC4?

Danuser was only credited as Lead Narrative Designer by default after all those scandal-related firings. Danuser's job was often referred to as "loremaster" but for the most part the Game Directors were taking turns being in control of the story. Since Danuser doesn't have any formal writing credits, they were actively looking for a new "Head" Narrative Director for over a year. While Ion actively avoided creative responsibility, while he focuses on game mechanics.

Basically Ion Hazzikostas & Metzen will be the two pillars of the game. With Ion handling the programming & game mechanics side, while Chris is in charge of the Art & Storytelling.

Side Note: That news that Microsoft announced they need to focus more as "games as a service" than "AAA releases" combined with comments about "Wanting everyone to play world of warcraft" strongly suggests WoW on Gamepass: Who wants to bet the 9.99 gamepass subscription will be the same as the 14.99 WoW subscription, but the gamepass version won't include those free 500 traders tokens?

Classic got all its lore covered, the rts series is no longer a thing and i very much doubt he'll spent much time with the Hearthstone and Rumble teams.

"Warcraft" and "World of Warcraft" are interchangable until they release more titles within the franchise.

So, basically, Danuser is in charge of the story aspects of WoW, while Metzen is im charge of overseeing, managing, and producing new ideas for Warcraft.

Except they announced they were looking for a "head Narrative Director" for wow, about a year ago. That tells me Danuser doesn't want that responsibility & it was thrust upon him after Afrasiabi & the other's firings. It'd be pretty insulting to try to outsource your boss rather than promoting you.

Metzen will be creatively responsible for a lot of things, but the narrative is still mostly Danusers to work on.

Unless they plan on releasing a Cinematic Warcraft Movie Universe, dictating the narrative of the game falls to the Creative Director. There's no scenario where Metzen is working under Danuser. That would mean a lot of the writing is Danuser's responsibility, but all the big story beats? That's going to be Metzen's decision.
