But a new team is absolutely not going to give him the leeway that NE has done over the past 4 years.

So is he willing at his advanced age to go to some new place and build everything back up again, with the very likely scenario that if he doesn;t get things done in the first year or 2 that he;s likely out on his ass again. Coaches these days get very little leeway. So would he rather get forced out of his comfort zone like that or just stay in NE and play with his grandkids, and enjoy the finer things in life.

The only thing making me think he's going to continue is his legendary competitiveness, and his desire to not go out on the year he just had, but on a high note.
Didn’t he recently break up with his long time gf? That’s a reason to start over right there. And I’m sure some owners will give him more leeway than the average coach based on his rep, though it’s suffered from the past couple years. I can see him not bothering if no one comes courting.

At the press conference they asked Staley if he will have a job tomorrow, and he said he didn't know. Then they asked him if he SHOULD have a job tomorrow lmao

(he said yes, but what else was he supposed to say? )

    Did he expand on that?

He said he should have a job. Not saying that job is Chargers HC.

They've had a backup QB carousel of guys getting signed and waived, Zappe, Matt Corral, Ian Book, Will Grier, Malik Cunningham.

Staley and their GM got canned. Almost like they should have fired him after last season and hired Payton.

I would have loved to see what Payton could have done with that roster in San Diego. Ah well! Staley lasting into this year was just a wasted year for the Chargers, that is a shame.

Those guys either couldn't keep a job elsewhere or were drafted to be backups. I wouldn't hold it against him that he isn't enamored by guys who can't even beat out Mac Jones in practice.

Speaking of that we're coming up on 10 years in LA which I don't recall if I said in a thread or just to myself but I said the Chargers would be out of LA within 10 years. For exactly the reason of nobody in LA cares and San Diego doesn't want them back.

Just saw a tweet that definitely heebies my jeebies about the Chargers.

Is firing Tolesco just clearing the runway for Bill the GM to come with Bill the Coach to LA?

Yeah, it seems an obvious landing spot now.

    BUT

Bill just went through a protracted (and very much unsuccessful) rebuild of an older roster in NE. Does he really want to do that again in LA, with the oldest offensive roster in the league, 40 million over the cap, and not much in (draft) resources?

The answer to that probably comes down to "how much does BB like Justin Herbert", cause the main reason his NE rebuild failed was cause he couldn't get settled at QB. IF you have that position covered, do you feel confident enough that the rest will fall in place?

Lastly: do you really want to start over in a division that also has Patrick Mahomes & Andy Reid?

I think the Chargers are currently the main obvious landing spot for BB, but it would not surprise me if other teams go into the offseason and clean house, and then positions might open up that are maybe more desirable.

It's not as likely cause the team has been better lately but, if the Giants HC position opens up, that would 100% be Bills preference I bet. He has very strong ties in that organization, having been part of their coaching staff in the past.

Yeah other organizations are probably going to clean house to try and bring him in.

But any team that is willing to fire their GM and let Bill handle personnel deserves the three consecutive 8-9 seasons they have coming. Everyone basically agrees Bill the GM was the problem in NE, only bringing in veteran players he had experience with. Does anyone really think that will change if they hire him as Coach-GM next year?

Chargers job can be appealing, but the ownership is still pretty terrible. Its the biggest obstacle to my being a fan of the team. Of course getting rid of Telesco helps, that dude was a motherfucker and I'm still bitter about how they treated Eric Weddle.

I mean, we very recently had a whole courtcase and everything, cause Bill Belichick knew who the new Giants Head Coach was going to be before the interview process had even played out. lol

So, it's not something from back in the 90s only. He has strong ties to people in that organization, up at the top.

Also one of the few times I have seen or heard of Bill Belichick getting emotional was when he was in the bowels of old Giant Stadium, in the season before it was going to be torn down, reminiscing about his time there, with him standing in some dingy room explaining how he had an office there with someone else, and how it was taking him back to times he remembered fondly. It's part of the very first A Football Life: Bill Belichick. The Giants had his respect throughout his time even while in NE, cause we have had a pre season game vs the Giants basically since BB got to NE. Every single year.

If the Giants have a spot open, I can guarantee you that BB would be interested, and that the Giants would entertain the thought of bringing him back.

Honestly I think of the three openings right now + NE it's probably the worst one.

Sure it's the LA market, but I'm pretty sure the LA Galaxy are more popular than the Chargers let alone the Lakers, Dodgers, Rams, Clippers, and Angels. And you have to deal with Spanos. Plus you're basically guaranteed to never win that division with Mahomes there.

So what's the benefit? It has a QB already? Not sure that's a huge difference maker when the Raiders just did that and the Panthers have Bryce Young.

The Chiefs are looking super vulnerable at the moment. You give Belichick Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa and I think he can make Mahomes look mediocre. He's already looking mediocre just from the receivers who are around him. Also, the idea of Reid, Payton, and Belichick in the same division is just a little interesting to think about.

I'm not sure what relevance a team having Bryce Young has. His first year has not been remotely promising.
