If the Patriots don't trust Jayden Daniels to not try to get truck sticked every time he runs the ball or think this season being a big outlier for him is a concern, McCarthy would make some sense. He'll end up going top 12 anyway with the Falcons, maybe Vikings and Broncos all needing QBs. Even if the Vikings bring back Cousins, that's still where I think he will end up.

This QB class in general just seems really over hyped.

Took long enough for the team to finally say they are releasing Russell Wilson after the start of the league year. It was obviously going to happen from the moment he was benched and Payton probably made that decision early in the season. The media being idiots and the team being PR bots was kind of annoying to see.

So apparently the Broncos still have to pay Wilson $39m next year, and any contract he signs for next year the salary is taken from that $39m first, except for the vet minimum.

Russel still feels he's an elite QB though and will want to be paid beyond the 1st year fo the deal. He's not taking a 1 year deal, that's for sure. But his deal will be structered such that the Broncos pay him and his new teams pays him after that first year.

Question is, who will want him?

Cause some team out there is going to miss out on the top of the Draft and miss out in free agency and be stuck and talk themselves into taking a chance on him and try to combine him with some developmental QB.

I just pray it's not the Patriots. (I doubt they will cause they had no interest in Cousins either apparently, which suggests that they would prefer to go young)

I haven't figured it out yet, but him being super cheap and available might be bad news for other mediocre veteran QBs trying to negotiate extensions.

It's Wilson, Cousins and Mayfield. If you miss out on those 3 and don't have a draft pick that can come in and start right away, you are in trouble.

Cousins and Mayfield will likely re-sign with their old teams, but if the Falcons manage to sway Cousins or if the Patriots manage to sneak Mayfield away from the Bucs, than that just creates openings elsewhere, and it might have a domino effect.

But, I assume that all that rumoured interest is just agents trying to secure their clients a bag from their old teams for now.

Teams with very little chance at a top pick in the draft AND no current reliable QB on the roster:

AFC:

Steelers
Broncos
Raiders

NFC:

Giants
Falcons


Both the NFC teams have a shot if a QB drops, but otherwise they'd have to convince another team to trade out. The AFC teams have no shot however even if they give up their current and upcoming drafts. And I doubt any of those teams would.

Of those teams I can see the Falcons talking themselves into Wilson for a year or 2. They have weapons and a somewhat reasonable Oline and just need some kind of functional QB to make things go and they'll be able to convince themselves that this will work. This is probably the most desirable spot for Wilson too. Cause I don't really see Wilson have the attitude for like...Pittsburgh or something.

Free Agency will give us a lot more clarity but my guess is Cousins and Mayfield stay put, and the Patriots end up settling for whoever is their QB3 on the draft board.

Denver releasing Justin Simmons is a good sign. Means they are finally going into rebuild mode instead of pretending the roster doesn't suck. I assume Courtland Sutton is next.

Yeah, but he was the heart and soul of that secondary. I still think of how emotional he was when Damar had his heart attack. He was inconsolable. He also was a big goof full of llife and energy....he was a little timid after coming back from the first injury....can't imagine what he's going through now.

It's a decision that makes sense as a football team and as a business, but he's just a fan favorite and it sucks.

One thing I will say for the Eliot Wolfe era so far: He seems to make moves early rather than late.

Already signed a former starter at RT from the Steelers for depth and possible starting if Onwenu leaves.

And now signed Hunter Henry to a new deal to keep him around as the featured TE, with likely a draft pick behind him and a blocking/3rd TE option (Pharoah Brown hopefully again, he was perfect in that role last year, one of the few bright spots).

I suspect the Patriots won't be going deep into the offseason to pick in the bargain bin for key positions this season. (anyone remember picking up Cam Newton at the very last moment, after Brady left and going into the season with that as the plan? Yeah, none of that this season.)

Jerry Jeudy is being traded to the Browns. George Paton really fumbled that one. They wanted a 2nd and turned down a 3rd and 5th at the deadline only to trade him for a 5th and 6th now.
