Patch 10.1 PTR - Dragonkin Rebellion Quest Preview

Patch 10.1 PTR - Dragonkin Rebellion Quest Preview
Today we are taking a look at a new side quest on the Patch 10.1 PTR involving the brewing rebellion of the dragonkin. Completing this quest grants the [Name], the Reconciler title. SPOILERS AHEAD

    Valdrakken
    • You will find Captain Drine atop the Seat of the Aspects. She offers the quest Cause Without a Rebel, in which she asks you to attend a meeting between Alexstrasza and Maldra Flametongue on the ground floor of the building. Alexstrasza doesn't believe they can stop the brewing dragonkin rebellion by force, and wants to discuss other means forward.
    • There, Maldra explains that she left the rebellion when she realized that they were hurting other dragonkin. However, she was initially drawn to the cause because the dragonkin have been treated dishonorably by the dragons. They tended to the isles for centuries without dragons, but have been reduced to servants since the dragons have returned home.
    • Investigator Erima interrupts the conversation and says that the rebels are in the city and have been stockpiling explosives beneath the aqueduct. Alexstrasza requests your aid in stopping them. Maldra agrees to help.

    Rebel Camp and Steelcliff Rampart
    • Erima wants you to infiltrate the camp and kill Agitator Zorelek, the leader of the plan to sabotage the aqueduct. She relents having to raise arms against fellow dragonkin, but knows it needs to be done. Maldra asks you to collect propaganda and capture rebels in the process. The bindings have a chance to fail, however, so the quest can be a little tedious.
    • With the prisoners secured, they are to be taken to Steelcliff Rampart. Erima says that they won't get away with anything there, but may enjoy some freedoms. You are told to go check on them, and run into Alexstrasza there. The prisoners will not talk with her, and so she asks you to go try your luck.
    • Alexstrasza explains to you that her goal is to see this rebellion brought to an end with as little violence as possible, and wants to understand the root causes of it. As you talk to the dragonkin, you find out a few reasons why they rebelled:
      • One says that they never asked to serve the dragons, but were commanded to do so against their will. Alexstrasza relents that the dragons have taken their allegiance for granted.
      • Another dissident says that every time there is war, the dragons send them off to die in huge numbers with nothing to show for it. Alexstrasza says dragons have died to protect Azeroth too and believed that they were fighting together and not just sending troops to war.
      • A dragonkin says that the dragons pushed them out of Valdrakken when they returned. Alexstrasza replies that they must work to remember that this place is the dragonkin's home as well.
      • Yet another laments that they have dreams of their own, and want to pursue them. Alexstrasza agrees that they should be able to do so.
      • A final one believes that they don't need the dragons as they have managed just find without them, a thought that Alexstrasza counters by saying they they should all work together to protect the isles.
    • With the information in hand, you recovene with Captain Drine nearby, and Alexstrasza explains that while she doesn't agree with everything she heard, she now has a better understanding that the dragonkin want change. She then asks for your opinion, and you can respond in several ways.
      • You can say that dragonkin are meant to serve the dragons and should keep doing so.
      • You can say that the dragonkin have been treated unfairly.
      • Finally, you can tell Alexstrasza that while some of their complaints make sense, they still need to know their place.
    • She takes in your perspective regardless of the answer, and then asks you on your thoughts about the dragonkin being made equal to dragons.
      • You can tell her that they deserve the same rights and respect even though they don't have equal abilities.
      • You can tell her that they are residents of the Isles and deserve better treatment.
      • You can tell her that they can't fly and are not immortal, so they are not equal in a sense.
    • Finally She asks you how you think the issue should be resolved.
      • You can tell her to offer the rebels their freedom and treat them as equals, including inviting them to work with the Aspects if they choose.
      • You can tell her to give them a dragonkin holiday.
      • You can tell her to crush the rebels with force.
    • Alexstrasza considers your viewpoints, and Drine informs you both that Maldra has deciphered a rebel code in the propaganda you collected, and the rebel Belaphon is trying to stir up dragonkin to the cause at the Rebellious Cliffs. She asks you to go put a stop to it. Alexstrasza says that she hopes they can resolve this without violence.

    Rebellious Cliffs
    • At the camp, you collect some quills, inform rebels of Alexstrasza's plans, and confront Belaphon and capture her when she surrenders. You bring her to Alexstrasza in Valdrakken, where the Aspect relents that the rebellion has gone on long enough and the dragonkin should be treated better. She also states that this decision was made not because of Belaphon's actions, but in spite of them. She says the rebel leader must pay for her crimes, as many innocent dragonkin are dead from the fighting.
    • Alexstrasza agrees to defer her sentence if Belaphon is willing to take up a quill and invite her brethren to join them in work, but not require it. Belaphon agrees so long as the dragons honor this pact. Alexstrasza thanks Maldra for her help and offers her a chance to take up this invitation to work with the dragons as well, but Malda declines for the moment. She says that actions speak louder than words, and she may take the queen up on it should she see the change that has been proclaimed.
    • For completing this quest, you are awarded the following title: [Name], the Reconciler.

You're free to encourage Alexstrazsa to beat the slaves into submission, the option is listed above. You can also bring your concerns to the WoW dev team over on the main forums that this questline about worker/slave rebellion has offended you, and that you'd like to see fewer instances of boss-employee relations in which the boss does not respond with violence.

I think the pushback to stuff like this is less literal and more about the way that the homogeneous approach to culture results in a fantasy universe where every civilization is essentially the same western concept of morality with a different skin. There's not much exploration of different systems of ethics and morality, there's just the acceptable real world morality overlaid on top of everything else.

    Not going to happen.

They could have just made THIS the new race instead of the Thin Mint Dracotwinks. Storyline right there, part of an entire civilization that thrived even when the dragons left, and now have to reassess their place in the world when the dragons come back. Tons of potential, tons of ways to integrate into the various factions and the player's role - and without doing some weird "'twas all Deathwing!" retcon.

    But no....

And now this story thing that's completely unreal, too? No choice you make matters, no decision has any consequence. All an illusion of choice in service to a storyline that's already been decided. Great way to shine a spotlight on the problem of enslavement and loss of agency, that - not letting players have any actual choice in things

Random pointless class warfare quest. Because wow isn't political enough these days.

Did you happen to miss entire zones worth of questlines about class warfare back in Vanilla WoW?

    you mean Westfall?
class struggle was the foundation, we were dealing with consequences there.

it's a recurring motif (sc2 LotV caste abolition, for example) because they've been brought up on these narratives. no, forced kumbaya will continue, stop asking.

I'm honestly so tired of that "argument" popping up again and again...I wonder if over on the FFXIV forums, they have the same players constantly going "New content? It's called FINAL fantasy, stop releasing new things all the time!"
