It's great to make a thread about my home state and what you cand do when you pass progressive laws not caring about what the other party thinks.
Below is The Majority Report gives a good video essay of all Minnesota's accomplishment. For those who don't want to give clicks I will give all the laws passed just this past few months or session in Minnesota.
First and important that Minnesota was teetering on going to Trump in 2016 but has steadily fought back to be solid blue in the state legislation with finally taking back the State Senate with a
1 majority seat. Let's look at some of the laws passed.
Paid family and Medical sick leave up to 12 weeks for serious medical conditions and up to 12 weeks of family members. Benefits capped at 20 weeks in a single year. 75% of Minnesota's work force
does not paid leave benefits.
Sort of all encompassing labor bill here, which I will give the highlights. Forbids non compete agreements in labor contracts. Teachers can no negotiate class sizes. Bans captive audience meetings where workers are forced to hear anti-union propaganda. Sets up protections for meat packing, Amazon and other workers.
We now have a minimum wage for Uber and Lyft drivers. Something that say California folded under.
Legalized cannabis. Yeah can't brag too much on this, but hey better late than never.
Free tuition for more qualified students. Families under $80k.
Universal free breakfast and lunch program for schools.
Protection of Abortion patients, Trans Refuge and Conversion therapy ban. We had abortion right here but codified it, just in case. Also protection of states going after asylum people seeking abortion or trans medical.
Voting Rights:
Automatic Registration. More access to polls. 16-17 year old can preregister. Permanent Absentee Voter list automatically send people who signed up an election ballot. Felons can have their voting rights reinstated.
Gun Measures. Laws or provision for red flags giving family members, spouses, etc a petition to court to suspend access to guns. Extended background checks private gun sales and transfers.
Drivers Licenses for All. Minnesotans will be able to obtain a driver's license no matter their immigration status.
One-Time Rebates for Low and middle-income residents. Not huge money all around $500 hundred or less depends on qualifications, but some money.
Big funding for schools with $2.2 billion more added.
In the video and the point being that with just 1 Senate seat majority the MN Dems pushed progressive legislation through that states such as California, New York, etc should have done long before.
