Minnesota Democrats. How to govern through progressivism.

It's great to make a thread about my home state and what you cand do when you pass progressive laws not caring about what the other party thinks.

Below is The Majority Report gives a good video essay of all Minnesota's accomplishment. For those who don't want to give clicks I will give all the laws passed just this past few months or session in Minnesota.

First and important that Minnesota was teetering on going to Trump in 2016 but has steadily fought back to be solid blue in the state legislation with finally taking back the State Senate with a 1 majority seat. Let's look at some of the laws passed.

Paid family and Medical sick leave up to 12 weeks for serious medical conditions and up to 12 weeks of family members. Benefits capped at 20 weeks in a single year. 75% of Minnesota's work force does not paid leave benefits.

Sort of all encompassing labor bill here, which I will give the highlights. Forbids non compete agreements in labor contracts. Teachers can no negotiate class sizes. Bans captive audience meetings where workers are forced to hear anti-union propaganda. Sets up protections for meat packing, Amazon and other workers.

We now have a minimum wage for Uber and Lyft drivers. Something that say California folded under.

Legalized cannabis. Yeah can't brag too much on this, but hey better late than never.

Free tuition for more qualified students. Families under $80k.

Universal free breakfast and lunch program for schools.

Protection of Abortion patients, Trans Refuge and Conversion therapy ban. We had abortion right here but codified it, just in case. Also protection of states going after asylum people seeking abortion or trans medical.

    Voting Rights:
Automatic Registration. More access to polls. 16-17 year old can preregister. Permanent Absentee Voter list automatically send people who signed up an election ballot. Felons can have their voting rights reinstated.

Gun Measures. Laws or provision for red flags giving family members, spouses, etc a petition to court to suspend access to guns. Extended background checks private gun sales and transfers.

Drivers Licenses for All. Minnesotans will be able to obtain a driver's license no matter their immigration status.

One-Time Rebates for Low and middle-income residents. Not huge money all around $500 hundred or less depends on qualifications, but some money.

Big funding for schools with $2.2 billion more added.

In the video and the point being that with just 1 Senate seat majority the MN Dems pushed progressive legislation through that states such as California, New York, etc should have done long before.

Well dang, I've started learning Norwegian as part of my back-up plan in case things go south in the US, but maybe Minnesota would be a decent start instead. Good job Minnesotans! Keep it up, please!

And why aren't Democrats blasting this all over the nation? Republicans boast when they pass something they know a judge will over turn but so far I've only heard about Minnesota Dems from leftist circles.

Just a note for my post is I guess Governor Walz is hesitant somewhat on the Uber, Lyft wage. We will see.

In your article I didn't even know we tried to get a Ranked Choice Voting (failed). I guess there is bipartisanship in worrying about your job.

BREAKING: Uber has threatened to end service across Minnesota (except "premium products" in Minneapolis and St. Paul) if Gov. Tim Walz signs a recently passed bill giving rideshare drivers a minimum wage.

What a shit company and I hope the bluff is called. It would be pretty much up to Lyft and they have struggled I guess. So idk if they don't want to pay like Uber or see a market opening.

Unfortunately, it’s not all good news: an effort to increase nurse staffing levels at hospitals died after an exemption was made for the Mayo Clinic, who threatened the legislature with the withdrawal of billions from the state.
Here they caved to the in state Mayo Clinic. More pull politically and they threatened, aka blackmailed Minnesota on a billion dollar deal.

Just hope with these two horrible anti worker acts more come to realize they need to act.

I'm not sure I would classify a 1 seat majority as "solid blue". I mean, It's great that they've been able to pass progressive legislature... but it seems like the balance could shift the other way without much of a push.
You will all notice that certain posters are all very keen to talk about Neely's actions before the Chokehold...but they dodge every question about Penny's actions during the chokehold.... particularly that he held the chokehold after Neely lost consciousness...

Imagine it went something like ‘nice state you got there, would be a shame if something were to happen to it…’

Sorry man. If it makes you feel better, ranked choice systems in general would be more likely to get Trump/DeSantis in power, so, silver lining?

Because most career democrats are libs. Minnesota got a bunch of young progressives elected.

This is a good sign for the next generation though. Might take a while to rotate out the old moderates and get in young candidates that are aggressive and committed to leftist reforms.

Just to add an important piece of context - they were able to do this because they had a massive budget surplus.

    https://www.cbsnews.com/minnesota/ne...0the%20country.

The big issue with implementing progressive policies is (obviously) raising taxes, and people's absolute abhorrence of it. Stumble into a surplus and you get to spend it.

In 2020 the only states that would have gone to the second round are Arizona, Georgia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Then you are assuming the broadly that the rest would have gone Trump on their second choice.

Sort of. I was being far more general and not referring to specific states and their laws, but ranked choice in general.

The example I'll always point to about the US and ranked choice voting (any system, there are several) is the 1992 Presidential Election which Bill Cinton won over George W Bush Sr. and H. Ross Perot in a 40/40/20 popular vote split, yet Clinton won a massive 370 E.C. votes. Bush and Perot were far closer to each other than either was to Clinton. Realistically, if everyone had cast their votes in a ranked choice system, W would have benefitted the most. Using the system Alaska uses, for example, Perot would have gotten third place and been ejected. Most people who voted for Perot first probably would have voted for Bush second, Bush would have picked up more votes than Clinton, and won.

I feel the current situation would draw a very close parallel. True, we are seeing classic conservatives slowly, too little too lately, turn on Trump. But I conjecture that more DeSantis voters would put Trump in their second-place spot, and more Trump voters would put DeSantis in their second-place spot, than either would put Biden there.

Going back to 1992 again, take the state of, say, Georgia. That state was also a 40/40/20 split. Clinton had a plurality, but only by about half a percent. If, as I suspect, W had only gotten a little over half of Perot's votes, W carries the state. Very similar things happened in OH and PA.

Then it's an ugly E.C. mess of course. Again, wasn't really talking about specific states actual laws and such here. But my point is still that Trump/DeSantis would benefit, each being able to "poach" more votes from the other who loses, than Biden would get from either.

There is also another part of ranked-choice voting (any system, there are several) that matters: you're not really supposed to leave entries blank. "Ranked choice" means all of them. It defeats the purpose to say "First choice Bill Cinton, second choice also Bill Clinton" etc. People who know their candidate is going to lose still vote, and still put in major party candidates somewhere on their list. If your only choice is Trump and he's actually in jail, you might normally stay home. Add ranked choice, and why not vote?

The current first-past-the-post system, on the assumption both Trump and DeSantis run, will doom them both.

Blame the Swedes, Minnesota turned into the "Swede" state, bypassing Illinois ;(

Greatest NFL team ever as well (lets ignore number of SuperBowl wins though).
But soon after Mr Xi secured a third term, Apple released a new version of the feature in China, limiting its scope. Now Chinese users of iPhones and other Apple devices are restricted to a 10-minute window when receiving files from people who are not listed as a contact. After 10 minutes, users can only receive files from contacts.
Apple did not explain why the update was first introduced in China, but over the years, the tech giant has been criticised for appeasing Beijing.
