they're gutting overpower and turning it into "Crit 2: electric boogaloo" because they're just now learning that it has mondo-scaling and has consistently been a problem - https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/ov...lo-4-season-9/
crazy how we're around 3 years in and the team is slowly getting to some of these issues that were glaring and present at launch (or that they made worse since launch like making overpower much more accessible and not keeping it closely tied to huge health pools etc)
otherwise it seems there are some decent nightmare dungeon improvements?
i dunno, i'm pretty glad i fell of this game hard this does not seem very exciting to me
Some nice stuff, some steps in the right direction, but still WAYS to go.
Of course we need to test a lot of the stuff that's only been explained, but in general the vibe is very much "same old".
It's good to see them explain some philosophical points behind their thinking, but at the same time it's disheartening to realize that they seem to understand things yet so consistently fail to properly implement them. Or perhaps there's just too much of a development lead time on all this, and they only realized all these points a year ago when this content coming out now was already done and locked.
What frustrates me most is the constant retreading of problems. The borrowed power thing has been the devil on WoW's back for nearly A DECADE. And now they're suddenly like "oh yeah people might not like us constantly adding and removing powers?" like it's something that's never happened before. The overpower thing is just another issue like that - no way, something that scales both defensively and offensively is bad? Man, if only D3's %-leech had taught us to watch out for mechanics like that OVER TEN YEARS AGO and in the EXACT SAME GAME SERIES.
That being said, I do appreciate many of the changes they're making and some of the uniques look cool. So it'll be an improvement despite the roughshod nature of their design paradigm, and I'm sure it'll be another week of fun which is an alright deal for a free update. But not great. Only alright.
I didn't expect them to change things up anyway. With the next expansion already on the roadmap, any big-time changes to the structure, core systems, etc. will wait until that window and not just be some random season release. Those will trundle along with small improvements for the time being.
The build-a-spell gimmick looks interesting. Not really sold on escalating nightmares. Turning NMDs into a gaunlet sounds great in theory. Not sure its really a true gauntlet though. This just seems uninspired and like they baked the rootholds into the system and called it a day. I feel like they could do so much more with NMDs
Not sure I'll bother with this new season. Unfortunately this game feels best when you take a break for a couple of seasons and allow the changes to add up to something more significant and refreshing.
