Post [Suggestion] Upvoting and Dowvoting plugin

Before you say anything: I know that you'll think "but it will introduce tensions and make people upset and: they will retaliate to others after they are upset",

there might be something worse happening than getting a minority upset: people bumping threads people don't want to see: it makes everything not fun.

I wonder if there's a plugin that combines bumping+voting; I mean in some kind of 50-50 way; but only people seeing the up/down scores might be good.

My immediate question here would be: What problem are you looking to solve?

If this is purely about the only example you mentioned, i.e. threads you don't want to see, why is a solution needed at all? Why is ignoring those threads not a sufficient option?

There's only a very small number of (sub)forums that would get busy enough to even have active threads on page 2. Why would that require a solution?

I'll be more descriptive of the problem; it's people who keep bumping a thread almost nobody else wants to see; it's often the OP but not always; sometimes it's just 2 people going back and forth in a thread (often in a very low-quality way) and nobody else wanting that thread there at all.

The people who do bump threads for either an ulterior motive or because they are fixated to a back-and-forth would often stop doing it if their thread is just gone; they'd be like "oh my thread now is not bumped automatically to the top so no point doing it again".

Ignoring is not a complete solution because everyone wants a clean first page with better-quality threads and that would increase the quality according to the opinion[on what a good thread is] of the majority (by definition due to it being a voting system).

Thread makes me think about the old proverb "be careful what you wish for, it could become true".

It's nothing revolutionary. It's a combination of reddit and traditional forums like this in reality.

The forum has very low traffic lately so I don't see any major risk to try improvements.

No matter the topic, someone will find a way to redirect it to complain about their current aggro.

The official WoW forum had this at one point, and it failed spectacularly as threads not made by popular toons were always down voted into oblivion.

I dislike upvoting/downvoting systems like the ones used by Reddit, as more often than not, I see them used as systems of suppression rather than the intended use of prioritization. They tend to create echo chambers where powerful blocs of users promote threads to conform to prevailing ideas while downvoting those that challenge or criticize conventional norms. In that sense, they become tools of repressive thought-policing, actively disincentivizing anything that dares challenge said norms.
"We're more of the love, blood, and rhetoric school. Well, we can do you blood and love without the rhetoric, and we can do you blood and rhetoric without the love, and we can do you all three concurrent or consecutive. But we can't give you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory. They're all blood, you see." ― Tom Stoppard, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead

Both serve a useful function and the extremes are good examples. On one extreme: 4chan shows you what chaos brings with approximately zero moderation (often it's neonazi-nonsense of course because they are banned everywhere else but sometimes you see some interesting thoughts emerging from the chaos) and on the extreme of an unmoderated subreddit: reddit shows what is generally popular currently (with some limitations (e.g. the age range on most sites of that sort is 17 to 30something only which limits their politics among other things)).

For me the ideal is some kind of directly democratic system without much moderation but the rules of the game change dynamically based on further democratic processes (it doesn't exist currently (most systems are either chaotic or heavily moderated)).

Up/down-votes cause too much bandwagoning; the Reddit example above being a prime example where people take the higher upvoted as gospel and join in on downvoting for literally no reason.

The only decent way to implement it showing positive numbers of up-votes, and not showing downvotes until it hits a certain amount and the comment/post becomes "hidden", similar to the WoW forum.

Can I downvote this suggestion into oblivion?
On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

I don't view voting systems and post/thread/forum moderation as synonymous in any real sense unless you're giving the moderations additional control over the voting system itself, which invites the perception of executive interference. "Popularity" itself is easy to wield as a cudgel against ideas that are outside of the mainstream, too.

A laudable ideal, but not one generally borne out realistically speaking.

Regardless of whether one personally likes or dislikes this kind of system, it is worth noting that chaud is our only site engineer and such a system would have to take priority over every other possible site update. I don't see this being the kind of thing that should take precedence over everything else.

(Also this has been proposed/discussed/addressed many times. It's worth searching this forum for previous threads before submitting a new one)
