Gamaeplay seems to be slower than in previous games?
Sometimes, the light of the moon is a key to other spaces. I've found a place where, for a night or two, the streets curve in unfamiliar ways. If I walk here, I might find insight, or I might be touched by madness.

Feels like they wanted to make a Hexen game, and a Doom game and couldn't decide which.

    Can't wait.
Ex-Mod. Technically retired, they just won't let me quit.

Generally they slow down the game to show all the "stuff" for trailers. This was the case for the previous reveals.

Hell yeah. If well implemented the shield looks like a fun idea, and it doesn't even bother me that it's a prequel, especially if we get into a mech and punch Titans in the face.

Can't make too much else out of a trailer but it looks good.

When he threw the shield like a frisbee and it came back, I stopped the video and looked for the pre-order. I saw all I needed to see.

Me: wait, Doomguy wouldn't use a shield.
Shield: has a chainsaw on it.
Me: understandable, have a nice day.

Also, that gun that uses ground skulls as ammo is so metal. Can't believe I missed that on my first viewing.

Okay, so I watched the rest of the trailer.

As I understand it, Doomguy got into a giant mech of himself and rides a dragon now?

I will need a special edition.

I had to turn the volume all the way up when Rip n Tear kicked in, Doom is freaking awesome for pure carnage.

It's like Doom decided to do a Blood Dragon esque spin off, only instead of 80s Synthwave vibe they went full on 80s heavy metal.

Yep, and it's not a spinoff but a full on main game, just set before 2016/Eternal.

    Some new interviews are up.

Basically the game will have some "open" moments where you explore and go back to other areas. The word sandbox was dropped. Hopefully its more like Metroid Prime type exploration. Time will tell. Hopefully more info at QuakeCon.

The New Mancubus. He looks to be about 3-4 times the size of the Doom Eternal Mancubus. Fires slower moving magma balls and doesn't like the Super shot gun very much.

Aggadon Hunter. These come from the Telos Realm and were tasked with hunting down the slayer and night sentinels during the crusade. In Doom Eternal they were resurrected and "improved" by the Deag Ranak into the Doom Hunters.

So it seems that this slowed down gameplay from the trailer was not only for show.

"It seems like they're slowing down the combat, reducing the verticality, and trading it off for much larger arenas with more enemies and weapons/projectiles that have a much bigger impact."

It is neat how the series revamp has progressively explored different historical aspects of game design. This article suggests a greater emphasis on granularity in the Dark Ages.

Doom as Evoland is an amusing meta-design gimmick. I wonder if there will be at some point a RPG-fication or nonlinear incremental progression system in a future game to represent contemporary game design.

Some of the design in Eternal was straight-up Mario 64, with blood. 2016, naturally, harkened back to it's own streamlined legacy but also the layered weapon design of Unreal, Quake, and Blood/Hexen.

That doesn't surprise me. Among other reasons I assume is because Eternal was a very fast game, too fast for some. My friend for example likes playing games on normal/easy settings for chill, and Eternal was too fast for him even on Too Young To Die, he just couldn't keep track and the Marauder made him quit the game. Of course to his face I tell him he's a loser who needs to git gud (and he says the same when he crushes me in Forza) but in actuality I'm sure there's a fair amount of people like him who found the game inaccessible.

And anyway, Doom exploring a different design philosophy game to game is totally fine with me, so long as the core elements are there which they most definitely seem to me. The darker, less "video gamey" aesthetic and vibe will also surely please a lot of people even if I personally kinda dug it.
