Getting a Fake McAffe virus detection only on MMO Champion

I'm getting a fake virus detected popup occasionally on MMO-Champion. No other sites I go to have this I assume its something to do with the ads.

I use Firefox, with two of its addons/extensions; "NoScript" and "Adguard" and no pop-ups here.

McAfee isn't known to be the best AV, so false positives will likely happen.

That said, what Shadowferal said isn't bad advice. Blocking ads isn't only done to block annoyances but also in case of malicious ads seeping through the cracks.

"uBlock Origin" is a very good ad blocker, however I believe a lot of Chromium based browsers are now moving to Manifest V3 which essentially means using ad blocking extensions is going to be very difficult. Therefore I'd recommend using Firefox as well.

I don't have McAffe it's just a pop-up claiming to be McAffe antivirus saying I have a virus. I'll try Firefox see how that goes.

Pop-ups like that more generally mean you have malware or adware already at work on your system - I'd recommend you scan your system with an actual anti-virus or anti-malware program to ensure that you're safe.

I did run windows defender. Was using chrome and would have 20+tabs up and the only time I would ever get it is with mmochampion. I assume If it was on my system it would show up on other websites as well.

Well theres also to consider that nobody else seems to be having this same issue which would indicate the problem is on your end somehow.

EDIT: Not that I know what I'm talking about idk if that came across aggressive just wanted to offer suggestion

I do occasionally get pop ups from bit defender telling me something similar....but only from MMO-Champ.

My theory is that one of the ads (That I do block) is getting detected as malware.

Ah, I misunderstood. As others have said, that sounds like either malware on your computer, or possibly a bad ad on MMOC, but I'd suspect for former.

Download something like Malwarebytes (free) and do a scan.

It is possibly a tainted ad, but the fact that you're getting a fake pop-up of that kind would seem to point to more, especially if you're actively blocking ads in your browser of choice. If you discover which ad it is, I would also report it to the site admins via the stickied thread in this subforum.

I just did some research and holy shit, Firefox is back with a vengeance. It cut a lot of fat (now much faster), added a lot of muscle (enhanced privacy options, ad block, blocks tracking by default and even ad block on YouTube) and is even dipping a toe into VPN (Mozilla VPN which is $5/Month or $60/year). Mozilla didn't fold despite Chome's best efforts.

I never lost respect for what Firefox did for consumers when they came out 20 yearss ago back in 2004. In a very short amount of time, they became the top web browswer in the world. An open source web browser was largely unheard of at the time and it's also what largely inspired Google to develop Chrome which in turn inspired Microsoft to replace Internet Explorer with Edge. It took several year but when Chrome eventually replaced Firefox as the top web browser in the world almost 10 years ago, Mozilla didn't give up. They just went back to the drawing board. Noow that I've seen Firefox has been modernized in many regards, I've made the switch back to using it as my primary browser on all platforms.

That aside, if you wanna completely mask your online activities you'll still want to buy a VPN (those free ones aren't trustworthy, forces ads on you and slows down your internet speed in addition to collecting some of your data).
