Unhappy anyone else miss the water elemental?

water elementals have been an iconic mage spell since at least Warcraft 3 (I don't remember any in the previous games but it's a very long time since I played them). when they finally implemented them in WoW it was great, my frost mage has been accompanied by one ever since. there was even, for a brief time, a bug where you could rename them (sadly when they fixed it they also reset all the renamed ones) and I called mine Puddles
then somebody had the ridiculous idea that because the min/maxers don't use them they should be turned into a proc instead. the ridiculous part being that this isn't an optional thing, despite them having recently hyped how important it was to give players more choices. instead our loyal water elementals are kidnapped and offered only brief escape from their prisons

sure, they weren't the highest DPS spec, but I enjoyed having my partner in rime. the ranged frost nova was pretty handy at times too
playing my mage alt, it just always feels like something is missing now

I don't really care either way, but your explanation is obviously off.
Min/maxers would have used the elemental were it better tuned, so again it's just a Blizzard design decision.

"TIME TO BURST SOME NOOBS WITH A SHATTER COMBO LET'S GOOOO!!"

It was more or less a PvP spell when it came out but yeah, I miss the old Water Elemental. There's a lot of stuff to miss for us old timers, nowadays everybody has a pet and you're just vomiting particle effects on the screen until your target goes down.

Conjurers would summon them all the way back in Warcraft 1.

I get that some people like the change, that's why I feel it should have been a choice. either the usual water elemental all the time or a proc for a more powerful water elemental some of the time

Nah just caused problems in dungeons, having it with icy veins is fine.

Just get so much haste that you prolong icy veins with spellslinger and the thermal void talent to be permanent for a permanent water elemental.

    200 IQ move.

Yeap, it was one of those things that made Frost Mage feel extra-special

It was fun for flavor and cute to look at, but mechanically... no. I hated having a pet that needs managing. Pets in WoW in general are just super annoying for so many reasons. They're a cool concept and useful in many spots, but they're just such a hassle and have so many issues all the time - not to mention another layer of micromanagement. No thanks.

It was yet another option they removed. I loved it, even though it was rarely used.

it does not make any sense that this happened, water elemental has been a basic aspect of mages since warcraft 3, it was their trademark ability, i had never seen a frost mage in wow without water elemental personally, whether in instances or outside in world quests, next remove all warlock demons and all hunter pets too? cause why those classes have that stuff since they dont need them either anyway

and what was the point of all those glyphs that customized the water elemental? they made all of them just to remove it a little later? its so unstable company cant decide what they want and everything changes completely with every expansion, there is nothing stable or static here even from the most basic stuff

I would prefer of elementals were exclusively a shaman thing.

Mage as a class fantasy is extremely boring in wow. They just shoot blue, red or purple bolts at the target, while other classes like druids and shamans can shapeshift, summon creatures, summon nature stuff like huricanes, rain, storms and earthcuakes and heal their allies.

Removing the water elemental summon just makes them more boring.

They still have the biggest thematics of their respective specs, like Fire mage can transform into fire form, has the most fire related abilities and visuals, and area of effects like flamestrike, meteor, and now even can summon the phoenix, Frost mage also has the biggest amount of visuals for that theme, with the ice spikes floating around, area of effects like frost nova, blizzard, ring of frost, turning into frozen ice to protect, enemies turning cold from frostbolt and slowed, even Arcane mage has good visuals like the arcane explosion which feels overwhelming, and their other striking spells with the arcane missles and blasts feel good too

The issue is that the water elemental was a core aspect of class fantasy and a basic part of warcraft mages, and making it temporary is useless especially since we had all that customization, and it had useful spells too

I think the main problem are shamans and blizzard is trying to distance mages from shaman stuff. From W1, mages were the ones who summonned elementals, including fire ones.

But in wow they made the saman class be more like an elementalist-geomancer heavily related to elementals, so they ended up with mages summonning water elementals (because of W3) and shamans summonning the rest, excluding the water one even if they had the restoration spec focusing on the water element.
