It is pure dps spec, heal spec, and a support spec which is basically just a fancy dps spec but instead of doing big damage, it makes the rest of your group do big damage. So I guess it depends on if you see the support spec as an actual dps spec (ignore that the support spec queues as dps in lfg).
I refuse to believe that most people prefer to play gnomes, tinkers and bards with guitars...sorry but no, I don't believe that..., especially considering that gnome and goblin are in the minority, almost nobody wants to play them...therefore, I don't think that most people want tinker or bard, which are gnome/goblin (tinker) classes...it doesn't make sense, in fact all the people I know say the same thing, that they hate undermine...curious no, so please don't try to trick us into believing that tinker and bard are the majority, because no, they're not, surely blademaster or necromancer are much more loved along with mounted fighter, a talent that should have been granted to all plate melee, not just DKS. In short, Blizzard always does everything wrong, they don't get it right because they don't think. And they don't think because they don't need to, since they make money without thinking, because you pay for everything without thinking, on the spot, when something comes out you buy it instantly... and that happens, and that's why we have a game for children, without sense and with so many inconsistencies...
i think most people who want tinker assume it would go to other races as well.
i could easily see tinkers also going to dwarves, draenei, worgen, blood elves, nightbourne, zandalari, dark iron, earthen, light forged, void elves, human and worgen especially if they make a spec focused on like mechsuits and golems like the arcane powered machines
bard is an easy in since its such a classic rpg class.
i would love to be a bard if it was kind of like vox machina

I won't speak to Bards, for a variety of reasons, but in the case of Tinkers, I believe people really underestimate the desire for a technology class. There's only so many mechs, giant robotic bosses, tanks, aircraft, laser cannons, etc. before players kind of want that stuff in their action bars.
Also despite common belief around these parts by some vocal posters; Players don't hate Goblins and Gnomes as much as some would have you believe. When Mekkatorque was shooting demons in the face on Broken Shore, people thought it was bad ass. So yeah, the Tinker having the most votes in this poll shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.
Believe it or not, some people want to play this game and have fun, be silly and whimsical. Not everyone wants to play a brooding elf or human.
And we know why goblins and gnomes are little played, they don't make for the best spank material. The most played races have the most conventionally attractive females and it's the only deciding factor. You think it's just that the lore for night elves is sooo good people just can't resist? Give me a break.
I expect the Tinker numbers to climb as this patch continues. The Goblins in Undermine are really winning people over. Hope Blizzard pulls the trigger soon.

I say we need a gun class, exclusive gun class. We have one class that can use guns and it's abilities look like it should be using a bow or crossbow. So yeah, I think we need one of those.
Otherwise I will vote for classes that have been in the RTS games. Like the Warden, Tinkerer, Necromancer and Spellbreaker. We should get at least 2 of those before we get a new class and if I were to pick, I'd go with a more generic class like the Bard.
Tinker kind of leading this poll really does show how most people feel about how well the mechanical mounts, pets, mogs and engineering capture the fantasy, though (IE: not enough to exclude a class based on it)
Plus, well, artificer and tinker both appearing in it the first place also saying a lot
