Just human nature. People love drama. At least half the circus is at any time going "I hope he misses the trapeze and falls". And that's only further multiplied by the creation of narratives like the Concord Saga that makes people want to join the chorus and find some small measure of ersatz validation. The internet is increasingly adopting drama and controversy as mainstay entertainment.
It definitely is weird, and cringe, and kinda sad - but not in the least surprising. People like narratives, and those go both ways. They'll ride the elevator up with you - and they'll also cheer when you slip and fall down the shaft.
