Yes, but that doesn't detract from the specific mandate of hte race. Not all races are mandated that way, many races have joined the fight because the powerful enemy is threatening their lofe, it's not hte same as living to defend the world or being your main task.

night elves of the Long vigil were one such race dedicated to defending the world , preventing the legion returning and hiding the well of eternity - this was their purpose, it wasn't "defending nature" - the druids were tending to nature yes, not the entire night elf race. In the pre-sundering era, before the Legion, they didn't have such a purpose, for a night elf it was like any other race, grow, develop, get more knowledge, multiply, improve etc.

In Warcraft the void elves are specifically about the void and defending Azeroth from it. The blood elves are not - the blood elves are about living life, they defend the sunwell, but hte defense of the Sunwell is not their main purpose in life, nor are they defending the Suwnell in general to protect the world, it is only in Midnight that defending the suwnell has become important to protecting the world as it is holding back Xal'atath and she is using that path to get to Azeroth, and so it has become important.

The purpose of humans is not to defend the world either, humans have multiple purposes, they're just living life, having their kingdoms and looking after their own lot, some defend the kingdom, some are scholars, some are ... you can name it.

The only races that seem to have a global mandate are night elves and void elves . Draenei I'm not to sure, while they hate the Legion, they weren't really about fighting it but fleeing it - they wanted to fight it - so i'm not sure if i can say their mandate was defending their home from the Legion, as much as it was be free and not be hunted by the legion.

Worgen - keep sane, other races, Goblins - no, tauren, no, Orcs, no, Forsaken? No Dwarves? no dwrven mandate is archaeology currently use to be mining - this is te bronzebeards btw... Pandas? No, Dracthyr

    What are you talking about?
The factions protect it every expansion.
    Demon hunters do it.

Some race have a mission /goal - a thing they are about - others don't - they just live life and have various interests.

the night elves had a goal during the Long vigil - it was a specific mandate. and even after it, they've were still responding to world threats, although a lot of focus had to switch to defending themselves from horde aggression.

The void elves want to study the void to save and defend Quel'Thalas and Azeroth from it's threat - this is what they have set themselves to do - and is why they study the void, it's effect on the world, it's nature and how it affects magic -s o they can beat it.

Yes, so they would not be villains, but playable characters on the Alliance. Doesn't mean they are nature lovers now.
