I've found that moderators usually provides good and simple reasons to close topics. But the most recent case I've encountered was "I'm closing this because the OP obviously has no desire to argue anything in good faith here.".
Which is very problematic to me as it isn't a proper reason on a cinema/books/etc. subforum to close the topic. Other people were discussing this and the rule goes like this, if there's already a thread for X movie, don't create a new one. if OP was problematic, it seems like a warning/sanction directed at OP was the correct way to address the issue
If you felt that the thread was not going on a good track then I would have been much more receptive to something pragmatical like I've seen many times. "Topic is based on rumours and we've seen numerous times too much negativity and seldom constructive analysis emerge from these. Closing it before derailing into other topics that can be discussed in their own threads."
The way it was done feels dangerous as it doesn't seem based on reality to me what you've described about OP, they showed interest and skepticism. And second, this message only validates and encourages people that are condescending with OP.
