How much AoE is too much AoE?

So building of the LB thread, how much AoE is too much AoE...Looks like blizzard has a ridiculous hard-on for giving mages AoE spells:

    1. Flamestrike
    2. Blast wave
    3. Dragons Breath
    4. Living Bomb
    5. Blizzard
    6. Arcane Explosion
    7. Cone of Cold

Isn't this getting a bit out of control. I understand they want mages to be the king of AoE...but 7 spells? Obviously your going to have preferences to certain AoE spells based on spec, but as deep fire you have potential access to all of these.

Isn't this overkill? Like why not rework 2 or 3 of the existing ones or give it some kind of buff instead of giving another spell.

Dragon's Breath aint a real AoE it's a cone in front.
Blizzard is only used for certain circumstances.
    Flamestrike lolwut?

Dragon's breath isnt real AoE b/c its a cone in front...hmmm interesting...is that cone an area? or does it hit more than 1 target?

But yeah flamestrike = lolwut and Blizz is usually used to keep frozen targets frozen while doing aoe...none the less its another aoe spell that is taking up a spot for a potential different spell

Re: How much AoE is too much AoE?

So many AoE spells yet... such bad spell coefficients and low base damage making them rather weak.

Oh wait, that is the reason why mage AoE sux DPS wise (compared to lock)...

Just shows how much attention Blizzard gives to mages.

All cone effects are an AoE type num-skulls.

Cone of Cold / Dragon's Breath are both point-blank Area of Effect spells.

Arcane explosion is pretty good I think.

Arcane Power + Arcane Explosion = Awesome!

And Flamestrike followed by Blizzard for 8 seconds is actually ok damage
I put 3/3 into Blizzard, but I don't see the company improving.

I don't think it is too many, Blizzard wants Mages to be the kings of AOE. Too many AOEs would only be the case if they were all the same.

    1. Flamestrike - Ranged with Dot
    2. Blast wave - Close range with stun
    3. Dragons Breath - Cone with disorientate
    4. Cone of Cold - Cone with slowing
    4. Living Bomb - Close range and stackable
    5. Blizzard - Ranged with slowing
    6. Arcane Explosion - Short range and spamable

Flamestrike is terrible for DPS and DPM.

There are only two ways to make this spell effective...

Use it on the 3rd combustion + Blast Wave(as soon as u flamestrike, so 3rd comustion affects both spells). 60%+ crit makes them rather effective.
    Or PoM Flamestrike.

Flamestrike will be better than AE in WotLK I think - with deep fire talents (assuming 3+ targets) it gets 15% extra dmg, and if you get 3 crits (15% extra crit rate from early talents) another talent increases your crit rate to 100%. The 2nd and subsequent flamestrikes will always crit. Although with Burnout it'll probably mean you oom ridiculously fast

Good call on the "hot streak" proccing like crazy, but yeah if you have points in burnout...you might as well not even cast fire aoe.
