Just a heads up on a new show on Starz that so far I find very good. This is an adult show and is meant for a mature audience. If you have the time make sure to check it out.

I've seen the first two pre-air episodes but I don't think I'll be watching it further. I didn't really like it and those special effects for blood are way too much exaggerated (I know it's supposed to) in my opinion. On the other hand, stuff like 300 isn't really my thing either.
I liked it. The amount of soft core porn was a little too much.. but it will be a good show to rot your brains on.

Selling point for one of my best friends was "Lucy Lawless topless".
Watched maybe 15mins or so of the pilot. Not very impressed. Felt almost like series version of 300.
But I'm not into that kind of genre, so it was doomed from the start for me. But I had to check it out :P
I, Claudius > Rome > This predictable shit
Story in this series is abysmal, CGI poor, characters blurry, nothing valuable you can take out from this show. at all.
It's better to waste your time on something completely different and also meaningless than watch this piece of garbage they want us to call "roman series".
I need to find these episodes online somewhere.
You can go to Starz.com for now and watch them. Personally I'm surprised more people don't like the show. I don't watch alot of TV but behind Dexter this could be a show I really get in to.
Don't be fooled by the Pilot's quality. Episodes 2 and 3 are much better, but like others have said in this thread, could do without the softcore porn all the time apart from Xena's boobies.
Peter Mensah, imo, is awesome. This is the guy that plays Doctore, the very battle hardened and very black trainer under Batiatus. All I saw him in previously was 300 as the messenger, but he really is a great actor. Andy Whitfield is growing on me too.
Playing Path of Exile and Guild Wars 2
I like it the trailers look good and I was always interested with gladiators and such things.
Plus since it looks like 300 that adds cool points

IF I HAD ONE
The first episode was fucking terrible, but episodes 2 and 3 like others have said are much better.
It looks interesting for sure.. the 300 style effects though.. come on guys you can do better than trying to make your show look like 300.
It's a terrible, terrible show. The actors are horrible, effects are ugly, story is somewhat nonexistant and the whole point of the show is just to show bloody violence and softcore porn.
And that's what makes it such good entertainment! Boobs and gore, what else could you ask a show for?
Its going another one of those Shows that show lots of Blood, Gore, Nudity. But no Story. Basically, another bad show.
Hell, if I want to watch a good Roman Gladiator, movie, I'll just pull out the 'Gladiator' from my shelf, which I believe this "Spartacus Blood and Sand" is based on.
I hate to say this but I am seeing a large amount of ignorant people here.
First, yes..the pilot was dismal at best but the show does indeed pick up and has gotten much better.
The fact that a majority of you are ragging on the softcore porn indicates to me that you really are ignorant.
If any of you read into enough history (in particular, the stories of Homer) you would realise that sex and love was an integral part of the roman culture (I believe Greek too?).
The TV series is accurately portraying the exact culture of what it was like back then from the evidence we have from that period of history.
The swearing is indeed a bit excessive in some places and probably not necessary overall.
There is plenty of story and although it could do with a little more depth and structure it is entertaining overall and certainly doesn't deserve your harsh criticism.
So far we know that the domina (spelling?) is corrupt like most politicians, we know that spartacus had the desire to free his wife from slavery and was since betrayed by his master, and we are seeing more character development from the supporting actors as of episode 6 & 7 (in particular Krixus and Basher or w/e his name was and his gay lover).
Although I would certainly love to see more story and perhaps some delving into other parts of the Roman culture ...I certainly wouldn't say that there is no story to it at all.
I also fail to see how this is trying to be anything remotely similar to 300 other than having Peter Mensah as a supporting actor and the name "Spartacus".
The special effects are different and actually make it interesting to watch - I've never seen this kind of effects before so I really can't say I don't like it.

The fact that people don't want to watch people screwing badly for an hour is ignorant? Really? Please, read what you just posted....
If the swearing is not necessary than showing fake sex 50% of the show isn't either.
I don't mind the sex, though I could do without it. The same as True Blood, watching the fake screwing every 10 minutes bores me. If I wanted to watch porn I'd watch the real stuff.
Besides that, the CG does in fact get better. The main thing is it's not original at all. It's just another Gladiator fighting movie with the same exact plot as the rest. But, that's the point. If your really into those types of movies, you'll probably like the show.
Just because it's not someone cup of tea doesn't mean they are stupid for not liking it just because you do. Stop being "ignorant".
Actually, don't bring the nudity and sex in this conversion. Not only you Myrrar, but everyone else too. Spartacus - Blood and Sand has nudity, softcore porn, gore and profanities. If you don't like those, then you're not the intended viewer and you should not watch the show. There's a different thread to discuss those aspects.Originally Posted by Myrrar
As for the story of Spartacus... well, did it occur to any of you that perhaps it's based on... Spartacus? It might come as a shock to most of you, but Spartacus was an actual historical figure and actually most if not all of the characters in the show actually existed and this is pretty much how things went. They probably added some extra drama to keep things interesting, but the basic structure is based on history. You can't either really say that Spartacus - Blood and Sand "is just like 300 and just another gladiator movie." If you say that, you ARE actually being ignorant. Spartacus - Blood and Sand and 300 have nothing to do with each other, for example the Battle of Thermopylae (the battle in 300) happened over 300 years before Spartacus was born. There has also been only one major movie about Spartacus, Spartacus by Stanley Kubrick so I don't really understand how Spartacus - Blood and Sand is "just another gladiator show" (plus gladiators aren't a very used theme anyways, there's Gladiator and that's pretty much it.)
Now, I know what I said about Spartacus - Blood and Sand myself in the previous page, but that was based on the first 2 episodes which were actually really, really terrible. But I kept watching and it was worth it. The show got tenfold better as the episodes rolled on. The story got interesting, characters even more so and the plot was filled with unexpected twists and turns like any good drama should have. If you wont watch the whole first season because the first episodes are bad or because the boobs, gore and profanities upset you... That's your loss. Spartacus - Blood and Sand was pretty much the best TV has to offer right now, and is definitely one of the best series in a while.
Actually, don't tell people what they can talk about. If people don't like a show because of sex or profanity that is part of the show. They may have liked it besides that, maybe not. But still, it IS a part of the show. If someone looks at this and wants to see what the show in general is about, gore, sex, and cursing is a big part of it.
The Spartacus in this show is speculation. This part of his life wasn't well recorded so they are building the story on their own based on what historians assumed happened. It's the whole basis of the show. It's the story that they made up about what happened to him before historical record started.
There aren't many gladiator movies? Are you kidding? There are TONS of gladiator movies though most are in black and white. They all follow a similar plot. Guy looses wife, is backstabbed, something that puts him in the ring. The main politician is always corrupt. He fights and has to defeat the best gladiator ever lived. And yes, most movies like Gladiator, 300, the movies about the roman empire and anything around that time frame are all very similar. Why? Because obviously, they are all based on the same time frame. And like I said, that's the point of the show. Lots of people really like those types of movies and shows.
