    Re: What RPG is best?

chrono trigger was awesome.... but i was just too strong for this game xD

i ran through many dungeons nearly 3 times, because i didnt know where to go xD so i ran in other timezones and fighted monsters who were much too strong.
after a while i knew, that i was wrong in this timezone, and went back xD

so after a while my lvl was so damn ridiculous high, that i beat every fucking boss so damn easily, because my skills were too strong^^.

But after all the story and graphics were brilliant and its one of the best.

Final Fantasy 7+8 are awesome too

but i never played this super mario rpg? to which other rpg´s could you compare it? it is really worth playing it?

Xenogears is my all time favorite, followed by Breath of Fire 3.

It's unique of it's kind in my opinion. The only one that comes close is its sequels like paper mario.

    Re: What RPG is best?

Here's a list of the "Awesome-o" RPGs and RPSs games in my life
    - FF IV, VII, VIII
    - Shining in the Darkness (Mega Drive)
    - Phantasy Star III (Mega Drive)
    - Ys (Sega Master System)
    - Beyond Oasis/The story of Thor (Mega Drive)
    - Fallout 3
    - Borderlands
    - Mass Effect
    - And many more i can't remember.

If i were to put my finger on one game, it would have to be either FF VII or Shining in the Darkness.

Chrono Trigger was incredible, and overall probably takes my top pick. FFVI and VII were also epic. Dragon Warrior 4, Phantasy Star 4, Lufia 2, Super Mario RPG, and FF Tactics were also some of my favorites.

Earthbound is one of my all time favorites for its cheese factor yet still managing to be a good game. I still have a record saved where I have the Sword of Kings and have been killing Krakens and reloading to get the Gutsy Bat.

Seventh Saga has to be the hardest RPG I've ever played.

I feel like new RPGs focus too much on graphics and cut scenes rather than gameplay and the ever-present theme music that made games like Chrono Trigger and the Final Fantasies so epic.

    Re: What RPG is best?

Super Paper Mario is the only jrpg I've played that was even close to worth it.

Other than that, fallout 1&2, swkotor, planescape:torment, baldurs gate 2 and mass effect 1&2 are my favorites.

I have to agree with you. Final Fantasy VI is the best one of the series, followed by FF IV. But, FF IV is my third favorite Square game. Chrono Trigger is in the middle. Play FF VI, you won't be disappointed. My favorite part of FF VIII was the card game, which was ruined in FF IX.

    On Topic:
Final Fantasy (other than 5, Tactics, and obviously XI) and Chrono Trigger are not RPGs. They are adventure games. There is no role playing in any of those games. To say they are RPGs is like saying a sports game is an RPG. There is no building of a character, other than leveling up, to do.

An adventure game is a video game in which the player assumes the role of protagonist in an interactive story that is driven by exploration and puzzle-solving instead of physical challenges such as combat. A example of a adventure game would be Zelda. The Final Fantasy series do have some puzzles but they have more combat and leveling then a normal adventure game which makes them role playing games.

Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines for me.

Then Oblivion, Indiana Jones and the temple of Atlantis, Morrowind, Golden Axe 1 on the Megadrive II.
Those were the best for me, never got into Final Fantasy really.. they bored the hell out of me.

How can you say that Zelda series isn't driven by physical combat? I'll give you that the Zelda games have no leveling up to do but to say it isn't driven by physical combat is just insane.

I knew once I said something about leveling up I would be giving people ammo against my statement. Don't get me wrong, I love the FF series. FFVI and CT are among my favorite games. But after playing games like D&D, I no longer believe that the FF series, other than the two I said were exceptions, are true RPGs. FFVI has some hints of a RPG with the fact you can choose what customize your character with the espers. And now thinking about it, as the series developed they gave the players more ways to develop your character. But, compared to games like KOTOR, FF has a way to go to become a console RPG series.

    Dragon warrior or Soulblazer

Earthbound and any final fantasy after 6 is way too overrated.

I was hoping more people was going to mention these . Otherwise I live in hope that all the Final Fantasy games between VI and X are re-released on the PSP so I can play them again as my PS1 and PS2 are both broken and I can't afford to buy replacements or a PS3.

Legend of Legaia on playstation is one of my favorite games of all time...

They made a sequel for playstation 2 that I haven't played yet, but I heard it wasn't nearly as good

Download an emulator. If you own the games then it isn't illegal.

The Mario RPG. But I haven't played it in years so it could be a case of Nostalgia.

    Final Fantasy.
    Elder Scrolls: Morrowind.

My first Final Fantasy was of course VII. I was hooked instantly by a type of game I had never played before. A gripping, emotional story and the most amazing atmospheric city in any game: Midgar.

Morrowind was so epic; so many quests hidden. It's a shame it's so buggy on newer PCs and the quest management system isn't more like Oblivion.
