Need help with my FPS issues

When I raided as a resto shaman I usually didn't take much notice to my fps because I was usually out at the back and didn't really need to make quick moves during raids. However a few months back I changed from resto to enhance and now that I'm standing right up on the boss with all the spells hitting him it has really gotten to me and if I can find a way to fix this I think it would be a great dps increase.

In Dalaran I get 35-60 fps and I really don't notice any fps issues when I do anything, even 10 man raids are perfectly fine. However when I get into 25 man raids is where I drop to between 6 and 10 in combat and it's a real problem.

A few weeks back I upgraded my graphics card from an 8800GT to a Radeon 5850, which definitely put a hole in my pocket, however this didn't change anything. And then today I got myself another 4gb of ram, taking me up to 8gb total and still no difference. Which annoyed me even further.

Can you go to your WoW folder \WTF\config.wtf --> Open it with Wordpad or something...

Add there (or change) SET processAffinityMask "15" <-- (has to be on 15)

Also it might be caused by too much data by the combat log, so you can try disabling that:

-Go to your chat boxes and right click on the one titled "Combat Log"
-Go into "Settings"
-Choose the first box titled "Self" you should see several boxes below that tiled "Me", "Pet", "Friends" etc.
-Uncheck every box with a check mark in it.

-Now click on the box titled "Everything"
-Rinse and repeat

Do this for every box you see in your combat log, "Self", "Everything", "What Happened To Me", and "Kills" . Hope this helps!

In Dalaran I get 35-60 fps and I really don't notice any fps issues when I do anything, even 10 man raids are perfectly fine. However when I get into 25 man raids is where I drop to between 6 and 10 in combat and it's a real problem.

A few weeks back I upgraded my graphics card from an 8800GT to a Radeon 5850, which definitely put a hole in my pocket, however this didn't change anything. And then today I got myself another 4gb of ram, taking me up to 8gb total and still no difference. Which annoyed me even further.

To be frank, I wouldn't expect a video card or RAM upgrade (unless they were severely lacking) to help raid fps. The biggest limiter in raid fps is your CPU, due to all of the information processed with 25 people, the boss, the adds, and other "special effects" (timers, counters, etc...not particle effects) going on.

You would have seen a much better leap in framerate by upgrading your CPU to one with a higher clock speed, whether dual or quad core. That, of course, comes with the usual caveat that it depends on how much multi-tasking you do or if you do video processing, blah blah blah (basically, things that would necessitate the need for a quad core).

Wow barely uses any GPU and 4 gb of ram is more than enough. Its your 2.4ghz CPU that is holding you back in 25 mans.

For anyone else throwing money at wow, install "rivatuner" and enable GPU monitoring, use the windows 7 process manage to see which tasks consume the highest cpu. Amazingly you will see riva report something like a 38-45% GPU utilization but cpu 0 pegged at 100% and cpu 1 only 1-3%

Overclock your CPU a bit and it will feel like a new computer "wow wize".

Get over 3.ghz and 25 mans will be playable.

I overclocked my AMD 955 to 3.7ghz and now 25 mans play perfectly.. GPU still sits mostly idle.

CPU usage drops back to 2% after it closes, WoW uses all of my 4850, and plenty of CPU when idle. It uses even more when raiding. The dips on GPU usage are from closing the game and opening it again to confirm. I don't have sound on either, or I could squeeze another few percent out on another core. i7 920 at 3.6.

Run a better test, instead of dalaran do it in raid. I have the same GPU and mine never peaks above 30-45% utilization in windows 7. You could pop in a 5x series GPU and dalaran would still be the same performance. I can guarantee that. (tested)

It's deff a CPU intensive game, a lot more then it is GPU intensive. I think it might be the case of bottlenecks; if your CPU can't be used enough (clockspeed etc) it can't peak on it/or on the GPU. A wild guess though :>
