Video Games. A market of Block Busters, and Shovelware.

In the Film Industry, ever since the invention of the camera, one thing has been learned over the many, many years. While some movies are Great, others are Terrible. Why are some movies Terrible? It usually involves a cheap way to get money.

The Video Game Industry, which is now larger than the Film Industry is no different to the rule. Ever since the first video game was introduced to the world. There has been a fair share of Great and Terrible Video Games. Why? Same reason for Terrible Movies, to make a cheap buck. But this one has a name, "Shovelware".

Now, with that said. We have a video game Market, where major players like EA have a 50% chance of crapping out a Shovelware Game. These Shovelware games are usually filled with Advertisements telling you, this is the game sent from the heavens. People believe it, and give up 60$'s on a Pre-Order to buy the game. Bring it home, and find out that the game is total crap. It happens to everyone from Hardcore Long-Time Gamers, to Casual Gamers.

So, tell us of your past 60$ Shovelware Purchases, and what precautions do you take now to avoid buying Shovelware.

For myself, after numerous Shovelware purchases. I have learned to NEVER Pre-order a game anymore unless I am absolutely solid that I know its good. I also check the rating of the game on numerous sites, looking at Critics Reviews, and Peoples reviews. Check the flaws with the game.

These things are 60$'s now. You want to make sure you are not being scammed.

Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor. It was total crap. Luckily I could return it, due to how Gamestop let you return games if you didn't like them at the time. I even got the collector's editon too.

    Ah, where to start.

    1. Turok (Xbox 360): Ran out to get it the first day, finished the single player in a few hours and while the multiplayer had promising aspects, it just wasn't all there.
    2. Two Worlds (Xbox 360) Oh how I waited for the game. Months of delays and anticipation, only to find that it was a total bust. Seriously, I think it was the worst game I have ever bought.

Age of Conan was a huge letdown for me. I got into MMO's because of Anarchy Online, and i figured that Funcom would have picked up a thing or two over the years. Fact was that there was nearly no content from 50 and up, several stats didn't work, and the game was RIDDLED with bugs even months after beta. It was superhyped, and super disappointing.

I was also insanely disappointed with Assassins Creed. I generally enjoy Ubisoft's games, but Assassins Creed was a letdown. The first couple of hours was "Oh my god, this is so cool, look at me!!". The next couple of hours was "Wait, didn't i do this already?" and the end was "Sigh, here we go again". Assassins Creed had the potential to be such an awesome game, but wasn't. I haven't bought Assassins Creed 2 because i am not convinced it has changed much.

SOrry folks but COD4 and the Like are shit. They shovel this crap out like crazy to make a quick buck.
same with GTA, Madden, and the like.

Been a long time since a good game came out IMO.

Sounds like someone hasn't played CoD 4.

I have to say, Warhammer online=bleh. Also, I havn't really brought many games, but I almost regret bying Spore. It wasn't all that it was made up to be.

The first Assassins was rushed to meet the Holidays, and while it wasnt Shovelware, people were under the impression it was borderline. Assassins Creed 2 took out all the repetitive game-play that the first had. Sure they could've upgraded the Graphics Engine a bit better. Video Games have a reputation for having squeals better than the first... most of the time.... unless it's EA.

    God I hate EA.

My most recent let down was Army of Two: 40th Day, loved the first one (different play style) but the 2nd one was a let down.

Definate disappointment: Alien Versus Predator 2010. Five very, VERY easy missions for each race, and a very disappointing multiplayer feature.

This bugger got me too, though not as badly as you.

Mercenaries 2 was the worst one that got me, buggy as hell on the PC, terrible FPS on the lowest settings, completly unplayable. This isn't my PC as it can play other and newer games fine, but it looked so good in all the previews and stuff.

Two Worlds was a serious letdown to me. Don't get me wrong, I didn't buy it, I rented it. Still it was horrible. The combat was repetitive, the characters were unlikeable bricks with no personalities and the voice acting was so lame it seems like they just grabbed people at renissance faires and gave them the motivation of "emote" which they failed at horribly.

OK there have been plenty of these since the 360 and ps3 came out, more so if you include the wii, but for this i will leave it out as 98% of wii titles are shovelware.

First major disappointment PS3 was HAZE, seen as the ps3 version of halo before it came out and once i bought i played it for 2 hours completed it tried the multiplayer which is so one sided its unreal. TOTAL SHOVELWARE

Next Kaine and Lynch - what a heap of turdtastic rubbish.

AVP 2010 - nice idea, shame its missing 90% of a single player mission. multiplayer is poop.

Golden axe ps3 - again my childhood mind set took over and i over hoped for this title, ended up being a peices of retarded misguided pointless jibberish.

Halo ODST - for the price you paid it wasn't worth the 5 hours gameplay, the multiplayer is halo 3, i'm sorry WTF, pull your head out your ass and make a new multiplayer mode.

legendary - uber crapola, graphics aint great gameplay is shapoopy and its really short.

dragon age origins on consoles - why did they even bother, it plays so terribly on a console i might as well just play with my feet and i'd do about as good.

WET - again a nice idea, but got repetative really quick and just the story line sucked

Afro samuri - omg hit one button and complete the game - loved the graphics and story but gameplay was uber poop

Army of 2 40th day - again they failed in making your partner AI even remotely autonomous, just not as fun as the first.

battle field bad company - now the multiplayer was ok ish, the main problem i had with it was the bad graphics very similar to haze and how easy the game was, basically infinite ammo the whole time.

Dante's inferno - short poop, rip off game, not very polished.

Killzone - i know it has a fan base, but its a poopsical of a game, i found about a billion flaws with it.

Mirrors edge - a game trying to show off and failing hard

call of juarez - i thought it would be great but ended up being pretty lame and clumsy feeling

tom clancy's rainbow 6 vegas and vegas 2 - could the graphics be anymore outdated at all. multiplayer mode is so poor

prince of persia latest one - omg how to kill off your fans by changing everything we liked about it and putting in some lady for silly looking dual combos. NO SKILL NEEDED HERE just press buttons.

need for speed undercover - bring back most wanted anyday this one is proper pants.

terminator salvation - oh noes another movie game any movie games = poop is a great rule to live by saves me a butt load of money.

there are millions more but these are the ones i can think of now any how
