Seems as though Beta by the end of April isn't going to happen. Hopefully this *was* a sign that it is coming sooner than later, rather than an internal testing function.

What if my cryptic hints dispelled excitement? Something was being tested internally which required turning on character copies. In layman's terms, there is only one on/off switch for the testing being done and that activated character copies. It was intentional, but not necessarily useful for you to discover.

Was that uninformative and anticlimactic enough?

Not surprised here. Already figured it wasn't something to make a big deal out of.

i never thought it was beta but he doesn't specify what they were testing so that something could really be something.

just have a friend with a really good comp use his system specs on your acct for the beta op ins, i did that for sc2 my comp kinda blows used my dads for the system spec a day later got a beta invite for sc2

It has nothing to do with your system specs. Well, it may have a little to do with it, but not in the scenario you're stating. How is it that I have a 9800 GTX, 3G DDR3 RAM, Windows 7, and an Athlon 64 x2 4200, yet I haven't had a beta invite for SC2? Yet my friend has 2g Ram, Vista, a Geforce 8400GS, and an Athlon 54 3500+, yet he DID get an SC2 beta invite?

Hint: It's random. Just like WoTLK. Me and my friends opted-in at the same time (Being real-life friends, we live in the same city also), and while I have a better computer, the others got in weeks before I did.

Keep in mind that for WoTLK they didn't require your specs in order to opt in. That's why WoTLK was random among all people who opted in. With the new opt-in that requires computer specs, it is no longer random and they pick certain samples of people with certain specs they want the game tested on.

For your friend who got the invite when you didn't, maybe at the time of the invite wave they only sent it to people with your friend's type of computer.

Hint: They send invites to people who have computers that they want the game tested on.

Let's see:
Charactercopies were without a flaw before, even after battle.net accounts were introduced.
Arena Tournament doesn't need a copy, because you get to create a new one. (read the Faq on this)

Either it's an enitrely different event, a test needed for the battle.net chat merge (duh highly unlikely), or they are testing if the link of the cataclysm beta account to your live account is working correctly. (it's likely, that they will add a "new" game, i.e. account, for beta, not upgrade your current WoW account. Thus there needs to be a link between those two, else you could only start with premades)

Alpha is for friends and family, it is the first stage of testing.
Beta is for anyone who gets a beta key by invitation or contest / etc. It is the second stage of testing.
