One thing i can suggest to people is if you are new or not, play as much solo as you can until you hit level 30, there is a hidden ELO rating that does the match making. If you are level 15 and you group with a level 20+ friend, chances are you will be pitted against much better players, or even just higher summoner level players (more mastery points, more rune slots, etc).
Solo queueing trys to do a more accurate job.
