Should I upgrade or buy new?

Hey guys, I'am going to either buy a new pc or upgrade my current one.

I want to do this because as my guild has been progressing in 25 man I lagg like hell on most fights e.g. sindra 25 when you get sucked in it is so hard to turn. So I have decided to invest in a new pc or upgrade my current one. I want to be able to run ultra and get decent fps in 25 man. I will be using this computer to record boss fights in 25 man's 10 mans etc and editing them also. So this computer is basically for recording and wow basically.

Here are my current specs :

Looks like you can use a little bit more memory and maybe an actual video card.

ok if you have any links to decent video cards etc would be nice.

So I have decided to invest in a new pc or upgrade my current one. I want to be able to run ultra and get decent fps in 25 man. I will be using this computer to record boss fights in 25 man's 10 mans etc and editing them also. So this computer is basically for recording and wow basically.

Sadly there's nothing you can do to get decent fps in 25-mans as well as fraps at the same time with full graphics. CPU is few years too old and slow (WoW is bad CPU hog) and no graphics card means you cant turn video effects up. You can put some life support on it to make it playable with cpu and graphics card updates for few more years. But honestly if you have the money to spend right now, replacing it completely is better use for your money and effort.

Thats really not a bad system, my old system was pretty similar, only it had 4gb ram, triple core phenom. IMO upgrade ur video card and get another 2gb ram wacked in there and that should play wow full graphics. Thats if ur strapped for cash that is, ram is one of the best things to improve performance, but u need a good graphics card. If you have £500-600 you can afford to spend, i would advice buying a new pc, one of the new processors intel have out the i3 i5 i7 processors. However, i would personally say if all you do is play wow and raid, an upgrade will do.

Upping RAM wont do anything. He's running on 32bit Vista and has already 4GB so there's nothing to be gained there. Proper graphics card will help upping video effects, but it will not help on low fps of 25-man raids.

Quad-core @ 2.4ghz shouldn't have any problem with getting decent frames. If your running only WoW and fraps. However, you need a new video card. You'd get the best bang for your buck from a ATI Radeon HD 5770. They range from $150-180usd. Also, you can upgrade your OS to a 64-bit version and add more memory (shoot for around 6-8gigs atleast). The new gpu, os, and memory will help you get more out of your cpu.

Heres a link to pretty good 5770. this lasted me awhile before i upgraded. never had any problems with it.

Q6600 is still few generations back, probably around 3 years old, and gives significantly less bang for the buck than current CPU's. It's usable still for most games, but WoW is different thing entirely. Also anything over 4 gigs of RAM is totally wasted for games. Nothing uses that much. You'll be hard pressed to even push 3d modeling past 4 gig RAM usage unless you're working on Avatar 2.

It's possible WoW will run faster with discrete graphics card, and I recommend the OP to try borrow some decent card to see if you get anything out of it or not, but I wouldn't bet too much money on it. Or maybe buy from a store where you can return it for full refund with no questions asked.

Your CPU is decent, not great though. Your graphics card is a joke though. Not sure what your budget is but you should get an ATI 5770. It will drastically improve your performance and you should be able to do 25 man raids without a problem on your current 2.4GHz quad core.

Around 20fps is the best that can be expected with that CPU regardless of if he's playing with 4770 or 5770 Radeon. Only difference the cards make is that you can up all effects to max and put on very high anti-aliasing modes, but it will not make 25-man raids run faster past the CPU bottleneck. Cataclysm is complete mystery on this regard, and nobody can say for sure yet if WoW's CPU-dependant graphics engine will get overhauled and to what extend.

Yep, that's absolutely true. However, the reason why I recommended a 5770 is so that the OP can invest into a new piece of technology that he would be able to reuse in a future build. The OP currently has onboard graphics, so if they were to upgrade to an actual video card, the difference would be night and day, even if his processor is not that great, but it's still enough for decent performance in 25 mans.

You guys are underrating his CPU entirely anyway. I'm using a single core over here.

Question was: upgrade or buy new?

Honest answer is: upgrading anything on 3 year old system is life support at best, and does not give the best value for money in long term. 3 year old Intel CPU's are especially bad in this regard since Intel has been renewing the CPU socket every year or so, and the upgrade options are very limited when you're generation or two behind in the sockets.

Q6600 will cap to somewhere around 15-20 fps during 25-man raids. 15-20 fps is totally playable for me and for many others, but it might not be for the OP.

I highly doubt that since that's the performance I get on my laptop with a 1.5GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5250. I think the OP can easily get 30-35 fps in 25 man raids as long as they get a semi-decent graphics card.

Q6600 - Not bad. Not bottlenecking sindragosa, in this case. Though OEM builds may not let you overclock it, which is sad and bad.

Nvidia Geforce 7050 - VERY bad. Bottlenecking everything. Get rid of! NAO!

Upgrading CPU in Socket 775 - No.. Buy new rig

Upgrading graphics card - Yes. Gogo Radeon 5770!

Conclusion: Upgrade Graphics card first and see if it helps. If it doesn't, just bring the 5770 into your new rig.
