Why did my rbg team, highest rating of 1597, lowest of 1487, get matched against a team that had a highest rating of 2647 and a lowest rating of 2151?

question - i heard the top rated and lowest rated player on each rbg team will not affect the group mmr (only the middle 8 will). Is this true?
