I have a screenshot of me having 64 Killing blows in a WSG with 0 deaths. I screenshotted it as a ghost.
It was the third time I died.

Seal of Blood recoil killing self apparantly didn't give you a death on the scoresheet at the time. Or any other recoil, as I tried it with Gnomish Lightning Generator as well.

Why are last hits the focal point of dps in bg's instead of...dps? Never really got that. You could be useless and get last hits.

Yes, but killing stuff in BGs is more important than doing damage. I could spend the whole bg hitting on some tree druid and do large amounts of damage, but nothing useful at all. I think an important thing in BGs is to choose your targets wisely. It is incredibly more useful to blow up someone who you know you can kill before the healer reacts, especially if he is occupied, than nuking damage after damage in the target he is already healing.
