It might come sooner than you think. Maybe not for next gen consoles, but certainly the next after the next. Maybe around 10 years from now or something (Just my guess)

considering the graphics in a recent game like FF13, I'd say within five years or so. Deprends tremendously on playform and game type though. But graphics are getting very good very quickly.

I would say when the average home computer or console can handle them, and run smoothly. The thing keeping back developers isn't the inability to create the graphics you are describing for gameplay, it is that the massive system requirements that it would take to handle the games won't be available (financially) to the general public for years.
