Finally got around to watching it last night and yeah, it was a bit much. Abraham's wasn't too bad, though it went for way too long lol. But Glen's, just masturbatory gore porn at that point. I've seen some crazy shit on tv or in films, or so I had thought, but Glen's death disturbed me a lot.

Credit where it's due I guess, Nicotero and Co. clearly took it to new levels, so props on them for the balls to do so.

The acting was generally pretty good too, I felt alongside Maggie for sure. Only exception being Carl, who was just emotionless and meh.

Carl is meant to be like that, he goes cold motherfucker in the comics.

Though Negan mocks his eyehole and he cries

Also Glenn's death was pretty much straight out of the comics. The whole Negan thing was loyal to the comics except that he picks Glenn in the comics and makes a funny remark at being racist. '' Is it racist if I pick him, or is it racist NOT to pick him? "

I think secretly that Carl is traumatized. I mean at the beginning of the series he was like 12 and all he's seen is death and destruction and constant danger. I think that's why he's so desensitized to all of it. Of course it could just be the kid is a bad actor.

I think that is how they intend Carl to be. He's been in this world since he was a kid, he's desensitized to the extreme.

why do i have this nagging feeling that something is going to happen to Daryl come season's end..... whoever gets "captured/taken hostage" usually ends up dying (Randall in season 2, Andrea in season 3, Hershall in season 4, random dude who plays penguin in gotham in season 5, technically Abraham in season 6 and now Glenn in season 7)
he will most likely take Holly's role in the comics (bag over head and dead already) if not then that role will probably go to Sasha (loved Abe and wants revenge)

::edit:: oh! maggie and glenn got captured in season 3 but i'm blaming plot armor on them not dying.

Yeah, one blow to Abraham's head was all I saw. When it was clear how they were going to dwell on the gore, I decided I didn't need such images rattling round my brain.

Well, it may be a minority opinion here but from what little I've seen, the comics seem crude, cruel and without charm. The TV show raises up the source material up by its production values, acting and some wonderful additions (like Carol).

I agree. As Machiavelli said - a prince should either treat someone well or else utterly destroy their capacity to harm him. People are resentful, vengeful creatures so killing a few and letting the others go is just asking for retaliation. And sorry, Darryl, but one redneck in a van is not much of a guarantor of servitude.

It's particularly bizarre after Rick's gang have just been on a genocidal rampage against every one of Negan's men they could find. It makes Negan look rather restrained, if flamboyant in his violence.

The prospect of this story arc concluding with putting Negan in Morgan's cage makes me think this show is in danger of disappearing up its own rear orifice.

Negan, what a brutally honest representation of a sociopathic leader.

The first half of season 6 I found to be fairly boring and my interest waned significantly. By the end of the second half of season 6, as the show exposed/involved more of the Saviors, my interest began to peak again.

Although, I found the idea of Rick and his crew leaving the safety of their compound when they knew and were preparing for the Saviors looking for them just seemed insane and somewhat out of character: lets send out all our best fighters out into the unknown in a feeble RV! I get that they would want to help Maggie, but at the expense of everything else? I don't know, that kind of stupidity almost kills my desire to watch any show.

Anyway, with regards to Negan and his Surviors, really looking forward to how the new situation plays out. A lot more interested in the show than I have been in a long time.

Glen's death could have been worse. I think Noah's death was the most disturbing one. (face getting ripped apart by zombies anyone?) and the Game of Thrones death in season 4 episode 8 but that's a diff show entirely.
making the zombies pointless is nothing new, they havent been a threat unless theres over 1000 of them and even then they usually only kill 1 person at the most.

There's a difference in violence based on what is perpetrating and who is being victimized. Zombies are akin to emotionless monsters, animals who only have concern for feeding. Similarly, watching a Lion eviscerate a gazelle is gross but feels less traumatizing. Believe it or not, as gory as Noah's death was, it still fits into this scenario.

It's much different watching someone flippantly abuse people, knowing the full outcome of their actions and being morally unaffected by it. Then for it to be so brutal and portrayed in such a whimsical attitude, it's utterly disgusting. There's a reason why so many people are writing it off as getting off on torture/gore, because it glorified domination via violence with little regard to the viewer.

I'm going to get a lot of flack, but there's a reason I say that Negan is a fucking terrible character in the comics and it's because Kirkman isn't really a good writer. The character of Negan is beyond comic book levels of ridiculous and if we want to be honest, it's a one dimensional shock jock of a character. It's pretty much trash as far as writing goes. I'll give credit to choosing the right actor to give it some credibility and for the show writing to tone it down, but if they keep following him this closely from the books in terms of actions and monologues...it's just going to get worse and most people will think the show jumped the shark. (ps, this is from someone who appreciates JTHM, because you can do ridiculous violence and crazy characters and still have meaning)

And we're getting Shiva for fucks sake. I'm very, very concerned for this season. It's like the polar opposite to Hershel's farm, but just as bad.

Negan's fine but he wouldn't be needed if it weren't for Rick's plot immunity and his character's arrogance. It's also a common trope in apocalyptic settings for charismatic psychopaths to form gangs and rule through fear and extreme violence. Heck, it happens in the real world too in war zones and 'no go' areas after natural disasters. When there's no law to keep people in check some messed up individuals thrive and make life hell for those they stumble across.

That's not to say that some of the stuff in the comics and show isn't 'campy' and over the top...but that typically comes with the territory where comic books are concerned.

I was more nervous about Negan using that hatchet over the actual deaths. My priorities are amazing.

I disagree. The guy isn't evil for shits and giggles, he controls by fear, thinking that he's the best hope for survival. And he's kinda right, his group was doing fine.

He's a reasonable person otherwise. Hell, he killed Alpha because she allowed rape to happen in her ranks.

The majority of his followers live by means of a points system to support themselves, with the exception of an elite few who give into his desires for a more comfortable lifestyle. Specifically, several women whom Negan refers to as his ‘wives’. Though Negan only takes wives that are voluntary, many of these women’s former partners are current members of his group, which can often lead to conflict. If caught betraying him with their former lovers, the women are given the choice to return to the point system or to remain his (though if returning to him, they must convince him of their loyalty and affection). If the women choose to remain with him, their former partners are severely physically punished for their betrayal of Negan by having their faces burned with a searing iron."
He literally kills a woman, leader of an army that was Rick's enemy, because he was angered by her allowing rape, despite her thinking it's disgusting.

She allowed it to keep her strong soldiers on her side. Negan thought that made her weak, so she slit her throat.

He has a code of ethics and sticks to it. What he does, he does because he truly thinks it's the best thing to do for survival. At some point he comes to realise Rick's way is better and he calls for a ceasefire and admits Rick was right.

He's not like the Governor, who was completely nuts/evil.

And I'm pretty sure that's prostitution. You want perks, you work for 'em.

Can't have freeloaders during an apocalypse, eh?

His writing is trash, don't really care who wants to disagree. He's a one dimensional character that they have tried to write into a land of interest, but it just shows that a writer and his male privilege don't understand what they are writing. Negan is a rapist who doesn't like other rapists. But hey, our current nerd culture likes to pretend that masculine power fantasies aren't rape, so w/e.

I can see I'll be unsubscribing from this thread this season for sure. Actually, I'll save myself the trouble and see myself out now. You guys can try and wash away rape and bad writing for the next 6 months. It's painful enough to watch these episodes, don't really need to be talking about them too.

If something is causing you discomfort then I recommend you stop doing whatever that thing is, in this case complaining but still choosing to spend your time watching the walking dead.

Rape was bound to come up sooner or later in a post apocalypse setting, goes with the whole power struggles and what would people do with no law etc themes
