Who knew that a music genre consisting only of rhythmless and structureless sounds capable of creating entire universes of musical landscapes in the listener's head could be so potent and powerful.

Substrata is one of my most cherished albums ever.

Some of my other favorite ambient albums:

    Gas - Pop
Stars Of The Lid - ...and Their Refinement of the Decline
Tim Hecker - Harmony in Ultraviolet
A Winged Victory For The Sullen - S/T
    Hoedh - Hymnvs
Troum & All Sides ~ Shutûn
    Robert Rich - Somnium
Angelo Badalamenti - Twin Peaks: Limited Event Series Full Soundtrack (yes, the new one is probably even better than the original)

Yeah I'm a fan. Big time. Ambient, dark ambient, space music. I've heard it all. All the classics and more.

Here's one of the greatest albums in any genre of music: Michael Stearns - Planetary Unfolding (1981).

Headpones on, lights out, eyes closed. You'll thank me later. =)

I heard this music by an artist who called himself Unlight like 20 years ago or so. It was this really rough, dark ambient, a bit industrial type of stuff. Someone had mp3s of that stuff. Since then I've been unable to figure out who that artist was or where I could find that music. There's a German metal band by the same name, as well as some Japanese game, and those definitely don't help with trying to find the artist behind the music.

Really nice tunes though. Wish someone knew who it was and where that music went.
things worked out better than we had planned • now everything's ruined, yeah

For a great dark ambient album that's relatively obscure yet highly rated among enthusiasts, I recommend "Blood Box - The Iron Dream".
I suggest listening in bed with headphones, it's an amazing trip.

    Here's the youtube playlist

Cool thread, I'll have to check these out.

I'll probably enjoy these playing while I'm writing and may find them cool for D&D sessions as well (depending on what's going on in the session that is).

LOVE it! Specifically Dark Ambient. So far, my favorite has to be Svarte Grenier/Deaf Center and the record label Miasma Recordings.

My all-time favorite dark ambient song (on my all-time favorite dark ambient album):
