No worries. I spent a number of months talking to Gigabyte, EK and Mips trying to get detailed info about the block fixings and board layout. After I told them why I wanted the info, they were ALL adamant that the block would not fit, at all. I had seen side-by-side images (really, really high res - like 20MP) and there was very little difference in the boards. I eventually got full data for the fitting and external measurements (CAD blueprint) and was able to confirm (with a 1:1 printout) that the block would fit. Worth every minute it took to do, considering it has halved idle and load temps for the chipset, even with an aftermarked cooler on it.

I'm still not done building it, but here's an in progress image of what i've got done so far. Lost my job recently so I haven't spent as much time on it as i'd have liked, but here it is.

All I use is paper towel and rubbing alcohol. Or even extra subway napkins sitting in my desk drawer. They are paper, they don't conduct electricity, and you clean paste off the heat spreader anyway which is isolated from the rest of the machine.

Both built by myself. The case on the 2nd machine was bought as a very bargain price. Considering using it on my new machine some time.

I just looked through my images and found this from a few weeks back.

    Click for full size.

Untidy as all hell, but this was right before a clean-up. Also, I don't have the energy to list my computer components right now :/

    This.
For *insert deity of choice here*'s sake, people, think of the kittens! Why won't someone think of the kittens?!

Also. I just won a camera (wohoo!) so I'll be providing pics on my own modest rig soonwards.

Well as seeing as this processor is a full 1ghz quicker than my old q6600. There is no need to overclock at this time. So why would i need an aftermarket cooler right away ?

I will get one when i need to overclock. Yes stock coolers suck but it does its job untill i need a better one.

They still make kittens die, are noisy and keeps the CPU hotter than it needs to be.

But yeah I can see it being somewhat debatable (he's not killing puppies) whether you actually should need it or not. Just that decent air coolers such as CM 212 Plus are so darn cheap and makes such a big difference.

You know it's not like Intel chooses to make their stock cooler terrible. They would be happy to include a kickass cooler and slap on another $30-40 on the total price. There's a reason Intel's cooler is the way it is: cheap, extremely easy to install (there are those who don't feel like installing backplates) and it does the job.
A cooler is only needed if you're going to overclock...especially with Sandy Bridge, which already runs ridiculously cool.
People need to stop making Intel sound evil/stupid for their stock cooler design :P

I'm surprised to find myself suddenly agreeing with this.
Although. Their six-core processors do have backplates.

... But I don't have to like their coolers anyway.

Using the stock cooler on a rig you pieced together and assembled is like buying a Honda to fix up with a new engine, turbo, and coilovers, and then leaving the stock tires on it.
