It's a very -ehm- artsy (or as some read, pretentious) look at the human condition, specifically mortality. If you had a hard time getting on-board with Memento, The Fountain will probably lose you in the first ten minutes. I have a soft spot for it because Clint Mansell's score for this film is nothing short of brilliant; but it's not an easy film to just sit down and watch.

I’ve been able to appreciate "artsy" films in the past. I don't necessarily appreciate them all, though.

    Thanks for the insight

First 2 segments started off strong. From the 3rd segment it got a little too over the top in parts for me to stay invested.
Animation is solid thru everything. Ending Easter egg just felt kind of unnecessary. Now, I know this isn’t set in stone, but the Easter egg, and whole premise, makes me think this entirely retcons Predator and Predator 2. I guess maybe they could have always gone back for Dutch and Harrigan, but the fact that it’s eluded to in the 2nd movie that Dutch is debriefed from the original events, and that Harrigan was allowed to run off the ship after killing one, doesn’t go with what this movie shows. I don’t know, I guess we could say a different tribe or something, but it just kind of takes me out of the premise.
Overall though, it wasn’t bad. Just not great, either.
The movie implies that the abductions come after. The lady from Prey being on the ship supports the abductions being after the fact. It wouldn't be impossible that Dutch and Harringan weren't abducted afterwards, not like something that would make that impossible. Doesn't take anything from the movies but adds events afterwards. My head canon is that Predators going the abductions are their own independent faction. All Predators aren't on the same side or group.

Speaking of "artsy" films, I really need to go back and finish Melancholia sometime. I watched the first half and was overwhelmed emotionally enough that I couldn't continue with the world ending part, which is what I initially watched it for

I mean, I considered that exact point. I even posted about it. It still takes me out of it a bit. We also don’t know if they did go back for them. Who knows how many different tribes or considerations are made for this. It’s just that these questions and ideas pop up in my mind while watching this movie and it takes away some of the enjoyment. It just kind of seems like it was done as a cool factor/easter egg reference, and not one out of cohesiveness.
I am probably over thinking it when it comes to that aspect of the movie. Regardless, the 3rd story, and the finale of took me out of it a bit.

    The Materialists 6 TO 8/10

A very interesting film that I am still not sure how to feel about. It left me with a lot to think about and Song's take relationships has such an internally feminine focus that it maybe is too close to the bone.

    Yeah, its about capitalism.

Edit: Also, this was shot ON FILM, in 35mm, on LOCATION.

    Real shit.

Dumb fun, but unfortunately the dumb outweighs the fun.

    F1 7/10

It's typical Hollywood tropes. However, the film is technically marvelous and fantastically exciting.

    I really enjoyed it.

How are the race scenes? I was disappointed by Gran Turismo and this movie looked like it was covering similar ground from the previews I saw.

Good. Very well shot... in a Hollywood way. That is to say, this film's primary concern is drama in whatever manner they need to achieve that. It's not Gran Prix.

About on par with Ford v Ferrari.

I was also fortunate enough/lucky enough to get to see this early--racing scenes were superb/technically impressive. Using Fencer's example--I thought it was closer to Gran Prix than Ford v Ferrari (actual racing scenes), granted I've only seen Gran Prix once many years ago. I'd imagine most folks will be satisfied with how they portray the actual act of racing a car on screen. If you're an F1 fan--some spots you likely want to switch the critical part of the brain off (less in the racing and more on the other stuff).

Compared to Gran Turismo on the racing parts? Not even close, in my opinion (in a positive way toward F1).

I was entertained. I'm in a similar 7-8ish out of 10 spot for it.

But in Gran Prix, there is an effort to show the actual position of the cars, the track (and most importantly, what is coming on the track), and so on. F1 the racing scenes are often in the cockpit, or the track is shot from far away. The quick cuts also obscure where the cars are relative to each other on the track.

It's very good. But I think Gran Prix feels like you are watching a sporting race. F1 is more like a metaphor.

Brad Pitt as a formula 1 driver makes about as much sense as Tom Cruise as a Navy Jet Pilot. Either way sign me up.

    Havoc - 8/10.

Look this movie is dumb im not gonna lie but it also had me laughing out loud. One because Tom Hardy is awesome and Two because it was shot in an interesting way. Its very much surposed to be a gritty drug heist gone wrong and a jaded cop is on the chase but it is very much like a tarantino film with that kind of over the top cartoon violence. Tarantino normally has much more engaging dialog that builds and builds tension that kind of explodes into cartoon violence. This was a bit different where the violence was uncanny and over the top but action sequences went on a lot longer than you would normally expect of a "bar fight scene" but it didnt feel like it dragged. I dunno most people will think this film is garbage but it made me laugh and the action/visuals were engaging/creative which is a refreshing change and any film with a protagonist where you can confidently say half way through the film they are gonna end up dead or in jail by the end of the film is ok with me

Watched it years ago with a girl who dragged me into it..and didn't like it. I just understand it..and I disliked a lot of the camera choices. But oddly it stuck with me. Also since then, I had more inside into depression and actually bought it recently. Gonna watch it again. One of the few films that did that to me.

    Elio 7/10

The art direction I think is a disservice to this film. It makes the film seem more childish than it actually is. The narrative is surprisingly sophisticated and subtle. There is whimsy of course. But the core of this story is actually pretty serious and affecting.

    Yes, I cried.

    The Phoenician Scheme - 6/10

It has moments that invoke memories of The Grand Budapest Hotel, but they are as fleeting as they are random. Otherwise the movie is largely a mess of scenes that don't tie together well and are burdened by distracting extra elements.
Now you see it. Now you don't.

    But was where Dalaran?

    28 Years Later 6/10

I really wanted to like this movie more than I did, but man did the 1st act/part not work for me. This movie felt like it was directed by 2 separate people, and 1 said let me do this opening sequence and you get the next part.
It seriously felt like the opening sequence was shot as a music video, or like they were trying to make some kind of Netflix documentary. The spliced in medieval imagery with spots from the 2nd film here and there just took me completely out of it. It’s also a rage virus, but we have an infected that kind of just runs off after Spike and his dad kill its parents. Seemed odd. Also, Boots being used in the trailer was awesome, but the way it’s used in the movie just feels like it’s tacked on.
The 2nd part of the movie was great in almost every way. I do have one gripe, and that’s infected Jim didn’t have the same intro/screen time as he did from the trailer. I looked at my phone to respond to a text, but I swear he just kind of was shown behind them at one point. I don’t remember him standing up or walking like the trailer shows.
I don’t even really want to acknowledge the final scene. I get it’s a set up for part 2, but that’s not my problem. Just going to say, anyone who watches the movie will understand lol.
