I have heard of it with silent movies like the Battleship Potemkin.

Somewhat common in NY, LA, and Chicago. I saw Mad Max: Fury Road, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, the aforementioned Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049. Jaws, La La Land, Solaris, and a few others performed with a full orchestra.

Oh, and The Thing and Ghostbusters.

I was telling someone about it irl and they said they had seen similar with star wars so it may just be that things like that aren't too popular. It was one night at the Bridgewater hall which is more of a live classical music venue ( I might be wrong about what it is as I haven't been there more than a couple of times but it certainly isn't a cinema).

Ready Player One

I watched it again just now because its a really cool movie. I have seen it before, but I am "rating" it now because it is also a movie with a deeper meaning than just being a popcorn flick, and I really felt it through the whole movie.

The end of the movie is both heartbreaking and encouraging. Video games are a place where we can escape reality, to feel good and to have fun. Video Games is a place where we can meet people where we can share experiences, feelings and to have a good time together.

My own experience with Video Games since I was a kid is all of that. With a tough childhood it was a place to get away from real life. It gave me joy, it gave me confidence where it was hard to find it somewhere else. All of that makes Video Games a place of safety, a place where you can be yourself and share yourself with others with who you really want to be. The end of the movie shows the owner of the Oasis from where he was a kid as a reminder, and he tells that he made Oasis because he didn't feel home in the real world. And that is a feeling many of us can feel from time to time.

But, like the ending of the movie, the most important thing in life is the reality we live in. To escape it is a good thing, but we have to face reality with all the struggles that comes with it. Then I'll say, in between the struggles, it's nice to plug in and have some really good fun with the games you love.

Free Guy: 7 / 10

It's a Truman show meets video game type of story. Not as heavy-hitting with the narrative, but it never tries to be while allowing you to have some character and story investment. Nice to have a silly, heart-warming story back in theaters that isn't trying to preach your ears off about social/political topics-of-the-day. My wife still laughs when she recalls the 'sock' scene in the movie. Was WAY better than Shang-Chi, to say the least, as the jokes in Free Guy were mostly funny and it didn't put my wife and kid to sleep!

OT: Recently rewatched Man on Fire: 9/10

This is one of those movies I feel pretty much hits every note. The acting, the music, just everything is brilliant. How did this not win any Oscars?

It was pretty good. I have seen the film in several ways and formats.

The best version I saw of Mad Max: Fury Road was in black & white in 70mm by an actual 70mm projectionist on the correct canvas in a theater from 1929. Pure cinema.

I have seen Fury Road projected on a dome, open-air at midnight in a bandshell, at an actual drive-in, Imax (this is really spectacular btw), in "4D" and the aforementioned orchestral accompaniment which if I recall was 35mm.

Edit: Actually Jaws with an orchestral accompaniment is really good. That film has a lot of quiet and the music is so flatly dramatic it creates a very intense effect for the audience.

I like to watch old movies lately. Yesterday I watched a movie about witches. I loved it. I haven't watched a mystical movie in a long time. Then I watched the comedy The Hangover in Vegas. That's the movie I like the most. I found all these movies on the fmovie service. I found a lot of new movies there. I have a lot of free time now. Since I quit my job. And I'm very happy about that. And I want to spend my free time watching movies and sleep.

Indeed it's weird >< I'm in Saudi Arabia and it's coming here in 4 days.. Not sure when this shift happened where America doesn't get things first anymore...

Maybe it's just with movies like this one. Seems Dune was produced by 3 companies. Warner Bros (obviously American I guess), Legendary (full Chinese takeover some years back), and Villeneuve Films (Canadian). These 3 countries -among others- are getting the movie pretty much last :s 22nd of October.. Followed by only Australia which waits till fucking December..

Total guess but I think it's entirely revenue related.. They release it first to the countries where they have no jurisdiction or means to prevent/reduce piracy.. In the US if you pirate a movie/show with a "strong" company behind it, or porn? you can expect your ISP to warn you multiple times and possibly end your service. So you have more paying movie-goers in the US... China? People will probably be too scared to pirate anything that might financially harm the People's Republic of China. On the other hand, some EU countries, Saudi, Russia, etc... they can't stop people from pirating the movie there. If they release the movie in the US first, they probably think they will lose a lot of money because all these other shithole countries will pirate the movie and they can't do anything about it.

Dune 8.5/10, maybe 9 if I'm generous.

First off, yes it's superb, best movie of 2021, you should go see it just for visuals and sound, those are 10/10 easily.

I've read the books several times over the years, this is by far the best adaptation. The best detail personally is how Voice is depicted - truly impressive. The worst detail is stupid spinning during a knife fight, but that's how people in Hollywood always fight, apparently :|

My biggest gripe is, (and I understand that he had to make tough choices fitting 1st half of this immense book into a 2-hour movie), he completely removed a long period of tension and intrigue and misdirection, when the audience knows more than main characters do; he keeps the scene with the flying hunter-killer thingy but not what consequences that event has led to, what's the point then? Several important characters become empty cardboard silhouettes, he should've cut them from the film entirely instead of leaving them so hollow. Really, Atreides land (super impressive starships btw), and 3.5 scenes later it's Harkonnen invasion already. Sardaukar are underrepresented too, so yeah, not a perfect 10/10.

That said, everyone reading this should go see this on IMAX or w/e big screen near you, and you'll see why we need the Part Two. C'mon people, we need this to be a hit financially, Dune universe deserves to take off even though it probably is "too complex" for some people.

Well, we are big moviegoers. Cinema is a huge passion for me. It's also the case that these types of special screenings usually are done at the same movie art-focused theaters and/or by the same special event companies. So it's kinda like sign up for one newsletter or go to one screening and they keep updating you all the time

We also have theater and opera season tickets and places like the Lyric, Broadway.com, Shakespear Theater, etc send you all kinds of notices when special events pop up.

I guess it's like any art scene- when you're in it, you're in it. They just send me stuff.

The Father (2020) - 10/10

Anthony Hopkins, man. I don't know how he does it in every role. This movie hits the feels, but also unravels the plights of those facing dementia in a very terrifying way.

Free Guy (2021) - Solid 8/10 film. Not some deep classic, but a thoroughly enjoyable film with a lot of heart. Would love to see how the story goes in a sequel.

Good light-hearted comedy for people who like video games. Some jokes are bad on purpose, some are very representative of #currentyear, I'll make sure to rewatch this in 10-15 years. There are moments where tech/corporate stuff obviously doesn't work like that, but it's forgivable.

There's a moment when the game says "game paused" on a login screen - epic fail or are they trolling us?
