    Lightbulb Hellfrost's Archaeology Guide

This guide is for both people leveling up archaeology and for people after specific artifacts.

Any research I've done was via wowhead. All pictures are hyper-linked to avoid TOO much clutter.

Table of Contents. (type in the letters in a search (control f) to find your guide)
    AAA Beginners guide
    ABB Solving guide
    ACC leveling guide
ADD Rare/Races guide (if you know your race, search for that race)
    AEE Suggested Addon: Archy

    AAA Beginners Guide
To start you need to train archaeology at any archaeology trainer at any of the major cities, as well as a few spots around the world (starting cities in hellfire, borean tundra and howling fjord). Open your professions page to get your two needed skills out. Once trained, when you open your continental map of kalimdor or eastern kingdoms, you will see four shovels along certain locations. There will always be four dig sites up, and each dig site yields three "finds" (the lootable fragments). http://imgur.com/1m4A2 Kalimdor Map

After going to a site you will be able to use your "survey" skill. when you use it you will get one of the four results.
http://imgur.com/LioUN Red. From here I tend to mount my flying mount and fly in the direction for the full duration of the 5 second cooldown. (direction being the direction the telescope points) Another thing is if its a LARGE dig site, red will send you on a wild goose chase. I suggest going a large amount in a direction that the telescope probably isn't suggesting, until you get a yellow.

http://imgur.com/sXCH4 Yellow. From here I either mount and walk on the ground (100% speed), or blink and continue running full time.

http://imgur.com/erzP1 Green. From here (with most recent changes) I take about eight steps forward, and adjust as such.

http://imgur.com/0HgVY Found! Loot your find, if a telescope doesn't spawn, you found it and it might be hidden under grass. Continue this two more times, and a new dig site will pop up on your map. http://imgur.com/vtlbZ Updated dig site map. Notice that the site in desolace disappeared after being finished, and in its place the site in southern barrens spawned. The site spawned is random.

    ABB Solving Guide

After you've gotten a certain amount of fragments (usually a minimum of thirty), you can solve an artifact! In order to solve an artifact you need to get used to the archaeology skill tab. http://imgur.com/2pVQ6 Front page.

http://imgur.com/lBRmO Ready to solve artifact, notice the orange bar showing how many fragments you have, and how many you need.

"Keystones" are items you will rarely get from finds (non-fossil), that can be used for two things. The first is to help solve artifacts more quickly, each one adding twelve fragments. http://imgur.com/g4Ve0 Example. The other is for handing in for a buff in a cataclysm instance as a daily quest (actually counts as 1/25 of your daily quests). After solving an artifact, a new one is generated (from a pre-created list of course)

    ACC Leveling Guide
This part of the guide is for the fastest way to level up archaeology, not for going after a certain artifact. My first tip is that, until 100 skill, save all fragments and do not solve any artifacts. After you hit 100, picking up "finds" will give you 0 skill, no matter where you do it.

My second tip is to choose one continent and stay with it. Factors for choosing your continent includes: bases on it (in my opinion eastern kingdoms for alliance and kalimdor for horde, due to their bases being in the middle of the continent). Set your hearthstone away from the capitals if you're a mage, make use of dalaran's caverns of time portal if you have a ring from the kirin tor. (6800 gold at exalted, teleports you to dalaran)

ADD Rares/Races Guide (to search for a specific race, type in their race)
This part of the guide is for choosing where to do your digging, once you reach the proper skill level (300 for outlands, 375 northrend, 450 for "cataclysm zones" uldum is tol'vir only, vashj'ir/hyjal NE only, twilight highlands dwarf only).

    AEE Suggested Addon http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-a...ils/archy.aspx Archy

Archy is an addon, that with light configuration will help you with sites that you often visit. A small list of things it can do: mark previously found dig spots (in dig sites, there are only so many spots a "find" is hidden), makes it so you don't have to open your archaeology skill due to being able to solve or click on the artifact without going through the races, you can solve with or without keystones with a switch of clicks, it will alert you when you can solve (with or without keystones), it integrates with tomtom, and has a distance meter for when you're actually surveying. Options lists are below

Main: Show archy, lock positions, hide minimap button, show skill.

Minimap: Show dig sites, nearest only, show fragment nodes (with you able to choose between red x marks the spot, or blue dots to show a previously dug find), show dig sites on battlemap (the zone wide map that you open in bgs usually) and / or minimap, you can change the tranparency of the minimap one's boundaries.

Digsite: A list of digsites that you can dig at. Show digsites, sort by distance, show distance, dig counter (to show how many finds you got), show zone. You can also change the header and row settings to make it a bit more or less cluttered.

Artifacts: A list of artifact projects you're "working" on. Show, filter by continent (like it won't show orcs when you aren't in outland and so on), announce when solvable, play sound when solvable (for both of these you can choose to have it do this when you can solve with keystones), confirm solves near skill cap (this will make sure you want to solve a project that will bring you above the skill cap, to remind you that you need to train before doing so, and it won't do it if you're at 525). Once again you can change the header and row settings. You can also blacklist races that you don't want to work on. For example, I have both rares from fossils, and am saving fragments for a later content patch. Every time I turn it on, port somewhere and so on, it would announce I can solve my artifact.

Survey Distance Indicator: This will show that how far you go in a direction will be what color away from the artifact, if the artifact was where you are now. You can customize the green and yellow distances.

Enable TomTom Integration & Arrival Distance (can play a sound when you "arrive")
