The total owed can be seen as 2x, where x=50 to begin with.

As you pay off \$2, 2x is represented as 98, or 49 each.

You have a balance of 1 dollar in your pocket, but the total no longer has anything to do with \$100, but \$98 as 2 have been removed from the pool.

Math is super hard.

well... seeing as it was better than 20 years ago... lol

10. 49+1 = 50
50+50 = 100,
100 + the 1 you kept = 101

Magic + infinite money :S

You haven't given back \$49 per parent though. You've only given back \$1. the \$1 you kept is irrelevant to the amount you owe. Adding it back in is just an example of bad math intuition (the idea that you can combine similar quantities to get other relevant quantities).

If I have \$1 and I owe you \$1 but I give you \$1 different than the \$1 I owe you, then I now have \$1 and you have \$1. Therefore I just created a dollar out of nowhere and the world is \$1 richer.

Science, bitch!

If I say I have \$1 and I give you \$1, then you think I have \$0, but if I then pull out and show you that I still have \$1 and you're an idiot you might conclude "Omg, you just made \$1 appear out of nothing" but if you're smart you might conclude "So you lied to me originally when you said you had only \$1."

God damn it, science. Why you so smart?
