    Surely there was many skilled and paid inviduals involved in these projects, but the big chunk of manual labour was made with slaves. They didn't have any engines yet.

    The bulk of the labor was performed by large amounts of farmers who had very little to do while the Nile was flooded or after harvest and awaiting the next flood. All workers were paid, primarily with food as there was no actual currency in ancient Egypt, and the workers themselves ate extremely well compared to most other people of the time. They would enjoy meat on a daily basis while most other citizens subsisted almost entirely on a vegetarian diet.
