I see no where that alerts you if you have one or not, maybe I am just missing it.. if not, I suggest a way to notice, it'd be awesome.

Go into your settings. Then on the left side under My account, click on General Settings. Under Messaging & Notifications, you can change it so it gives you a pop-up notification when you get a new PM.

Yeah, I think a lot of users tend to miss when a number happens to show up next to Notifications, though, if they're unfamiliar with the system. The pop-up is convenient, but it gets kind of annoying after awhile. You'll gradually get trained into just glancing up at the notifications each time you come to the site if you know to look. At least, that's what happened for me.

I found this option while I was changing it to pop-up, definitely prefer email.
