Rift appears to be shaping up to be something special for pvp.

Best PvP game ever was DOAC. Never had such fun at pvp. 8vs8 fights were trend setting for me.
Keep raids anfd relic raids were awesome.
Huge battles 100vs100 with only one goal to strengthen the own realm.

Aww... I guess im not really surprised to NOT see Dark Ages (Not DAoC).

For those that did play, I'm sure they would back me in saying that it had some of the best PvP before the developers hacked away at it. Good times =)

DAoC was by FAR the best MMO PvP game in it's time. (it's complete junk now)
It's the only game that allowed for large scale PvP fights that weren't just TAB and Zerg fests.
And because skill actually mattered more than numbers in that game, you could go 8 vs 50 and win.

Ultima Online had amazing small scale PvP 1v1 thru about 4v4, but in large scale fights the game was just broken. Have your group all precast Ebolt run in and the first target auto dies with no way to defend itself. Tho UO was probably the only MMO that took skill to be good at 1v1.

But the PvP systems in those old games are too harsh. Full loot drop on death? 45sec duration AoE CC?
In the post WoW MMO Era nobody is going to put up with that shit anymore even if they did try and recreate the games.

DCUO pvp is akin to WoW pvp with everyone playing rogues, pre-stunlock nerf and with unlimited energy and no gcd. Also, no drs.

To put it simply, it's quite one sided once a fight starts.

    BLC, it's free and ballin'.

    How ballin' is it?

It took 2gd away from us. That's how ballin' it is.

Pre-insurance Ultima Online, no doubt. Anyone who says otherwise didn't play it or got owned by pks early on and bailed I don't believe we will ever see game like UO again though, because nowdays almost everyone wants just safe pve Image wow where everyone could kill everyone (with some penalties of course, like after few unjust kills guards would kill you in cities..), there were no instances (so you could go to dungeon to discover it is empty or already occupied by another group - which you could kill and finish dungeon with your group ) and you would drop all stuff you carry around when you die. On death you wouldn't have to run from healer to your body, but from your body to healer and then without anything back to loot your body praying random harpy or ettin won't kill you again ;p

Eve online is close to UO adrenaline wise, however in my opinion it lacks skill component. I mean skill component is there, but it's different - you must choose right ship and put right fit (gear) on it, but fight itself doesn't require much decision making. That goes for soloing and small fleets. I didn't get into large fleets, but it is not that different - all decision making is done by fleet commander and you just follow orders. Only thing that require somewhat skill while fighting is probably logistics and maybe EWAR pilots (please tell me if you think I'm wrong).

From carebear point of view I must say Guild Wars has the best pvp probably.

Wasnt this thread about MMO-games? Whats up with all the wow hate, and warhammer nonsense?! I played warhammer alot and theres next to no "game-feel" to it. Compared to wow its shiet, it all about how the game floats. No stupid glitches.

Sure, wow might not be the most balanced game out there, but I bet most of you are thinking in a 1v1 perspective, wow pvp is all about playing in a team. In all fairness have a look at a random decent pvp vid from wow and compare that to a warhammer one

    my cents

If this is generalized to games with any sort of PvP aspect I would have to go with the DOTA style games (DOTA 2, LoL, HoN, etc). As far as MMO's go, after many years of failed balancing, I think Lineage 2 finally go theirs right.

    inb4 archers/dagger classes 2 shotting everyone.

I wouldn't vote for the PvP of any MMOs that are out now, honestly. From what I heard, DAoC was pretty cool, but since I never played it I can't give any input on it. The only MMO that I think looks promising on the PvP-end of the game is Guild Wars 2. MMOs just aren't PvP games.

If I had to pick my personal favorite, I'd easily vote for TF2. It's probably the best free to play game, and it's a lot more fun than some of the newer shooters that have came out recently. MOBAs are also a good choice for PvP, but they just aren't my cup of tea.

    Runescapes PVP

    Okay.. OT:

Rift's PVP was pretty fun (not balanced)
And LoL is pretty good, and free.
TF2 will be your best bet ;3

Halo 2, Cstrike, COD if you run with a full party, Starcraft 2, I'm not a big fan of the MMO pvp.

Well, if we talk about WoW-styled PvP-game, then I'd say Guild Wars. Otherwise Heroes of Newerth and Call of Duty games.

Fighting games generally run their own tournaments since MLG/WCG and others on seem to be able to make a mess of it (wrong games played, stupid formats etc.).
Most played/popular games are street fighter 4 and marvel vs capcom 3 both in their most current form (umvc3 and ssf4AE - soon 2012 balance version).
Mortal Kombat is also fairly popular. Tekken 6 is also still okay but it is a little old now so running out of steam. Smaller titles like Blazblue are also being played.

If you are worried that fighting games are not popular, please see the link. Please note that this is about the largest tournament but it was also held during a MLG weekend.

Outside of SC2 and LoL it draws in the most streamviewers. Also because shooters aren't really that much fun to watch for the same reasons why WoW is kind of boring (edit: to watch). That is why these 3 are also easier to market and get sponsorships for.

One problem though, fighting games generally have a very large threshold for the starting player because it takes a lot of practise (generally in a practise room son no actual fighting) to get your character to do what you want. And this is before the actual metagame (so the actual fighting against an opponent) even starts.

Before the game was killed completely by it's devs, conquer online had simple pvp that was fun as anything I've ever played. Say what you will about graphics and what not, but if you were good in that game, you could slaughter people and that made it a complete blast.
