Is there a simple way to copy someone's name and paste it? I like to have an assist macro for whatever tank I am working with. But now people have names with strange characters in them and I have no idea how to make those characters. Any tips?

Once they say something, open up your chat box and shift click their name. That will input their name into the chat box and from there you can just copy and paste.

There are also addons that will let you copy/paste to/from chat. I believe Chatter is one, there are definitely more out there.

typing " %t " in any macro will mean "target", no need for changing names all the time
Edit: Im not a genius with macroes, but I think something along with /assist %t will do the trick

1. Target Tank
2. Type "/focus"
3. Click macro "/assist focus"
4. Type "/clearfocus" when last boss is dead
5. Type "/p Thank you for run."
6. Profit
