It seems to me that you are talking about today, how much we know today and what is possible from todays view, the problem is that most scientist agrees that within the next 50 years mankind will develop more technology than we have the last 50'000 years. then what about 100 years? 100 years ago from now science was way behind from what it is today, and computers have developed "as hell" the last 20 years only, even though most of the money pumped in to computer technology started 10 years ago.

That they can adapt, learn, calculate, record, move and talk. but they can't do things on their own. They must be programmed and they cannot think for themselves. they just follow orders.

A robot can be programmed to do a parcours and learn from its mistakes, that doesn't mean he can think. Thinking isn't the same as doing it.

    Watch this

Robot's CANNOT do that, use techniques from other learning processes in a different process. this makes an animal or computer smart. Computers CAN'T.

You churn out some weird arguments, mate. Why don't you show us some of all these things you've read?

Yes, programs can "learn" and make decisions based on data from their past experiences.

No, computing systems can't become self-aware. It might however be possible to achieve through biological integration, but you never know what the future brings.

Denying that it is possible is just plain silly though.

I really don't see your point.
    Isn't that what we do?

We experience scenarios, take action, learn from what happened, rinse and repeat.
There is a reason we put large warning labels on things that are toxic, just so no-one gets the idea to drink it.

they already have - if every PC suddenly dissapeared think the trouble we would be in.

We have emotion, we have consciousness. Computers don't Emotion and Consciousness seperates some animals ( like Humans, Doplphins, Crows, Ravens, eliphants etc. ) from the rest of the animals. They do stuff but they don't really witness it. (God my english is bad else i could make it clearer )

We use techniques from processes for a different process. a computer sees every process different and can't use the knowledge of one process for another.

    OT:
Problaly 200years, 50-150years seems way too soon, but yeah, you're quite right, we've advanced a ton in the past 100years, so why not? :P

Looking at it this that way you are absolutely right, it is wrong of people to say that something is definitely not a possibility with regards to science without it first fully being explored. I apologise for not making this more clear in my response.

But the OP asked the question, when will computers take over the world? My response was basically stating the current position that we're at with regards to development of AI and that computers being able to think for themselves is improbable, however it is always good to remain ideal about subjects such as these.

Well, I as far as I understood your earlier posts, they sounded more like "Computers will never be intelligent, I study this, and thus I know it", which sounded highly ridiculous to me. Maybe I misunderstood your point, but MY point also NEVER was that we already know how to make a working "real" AI. I just said, that the acceleration of technological advances will likely make it possible to create machines beyond what we can imagine today before the next decade begins...

edit: I just read somewhere, that the US army expects to have humanoid robot grunts in battle by 2025 Oo

    Why must they do that?

Whos to say computers wont evolve empathy and sympathy before they gain enough to sense to see that humans are redundant, inefficient and stupid?

Or if they will calculate that eliminating humanity is not beneficial to them?

Or if they will see us as more advanced than them?

This is not how science works...The system of science is layered. You might be invented something but its way of working has to depend older laws/logics. I do not know what do you mean with intelligence is fully explained but the problem with AI is the learning part...this is the most complex event occurs in human brain and science is far behind explaining it.

    - Advances in technology speed up exponentially

From these 3 assumptions it is clear that we will create artificial intelligence similar to our own. This intelligence would be able to create even more advanced intelligence and so forth..
So it is inevitable that "artificial" intelligence will become more powerful than human intelligence, which in return means that machines WILL take over the world at some point.

The question is: when will it happen ? What do you think ? I'd say 50-150 years. This may sound ridiculously soon, but think about what humans achieved in the last 50 years. A global Communication system, which stores nearly ALL information generated in the world, accessible by everyone at anytime, mobile phones that work nearly everywhere, airplanes that can't be controlled by humans anymore, just by computers, etc...

remember, computing power has grown exponentially for quite some time now, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moore's_law
they already have started, computers are in nearly everything, cars, phones, communications, schools, military, government, hospitals, your house... when will it get out of control.. now thats a question waiting to be answered :P. and within 50-150 years? I think sooner.

I'm sure that computers at the intelligence level of humans WILL have empathy etc.
BUT: once they get more efficient and intelligent than us, they probably will see us more and more as useless. Imagine what humanity would do if they found a planet full of slightly less intelligent beings. The first thing we would do is take control. Then we would slowly reduce their numbers, since we needed the resources of that planet for ourselves. Empathy does not really work when survival of the fittest kicks in. At least that is my guess.
