I would prefer if there were mounts mostly for cosmetic purposes, usually mounts look bad a** and they would be another thing to collect. Characters in GW2 run pretty fast with weapons sheathed, so I don't really think we need them to move that quick with the map travel system.

If that's the situation I would prefer vanity pets that are actually sizable. Not the 1/100 scale that WoW has

I think I'd prefer a Charr to ride on an Asura's shoulders.

Give it time.. I'm sure we'll see machina comedies of it

Am I the only one that just got a mental image of an Asura trying to ride a moa? Picture it, A moa bird with a strange saddle like contraption half strapped to it. An asura clinging to its neck for dear life as it runs around. All the while the asura is trying to argue with the bird that its just logical to accept the saddle and be a good mount.

Instead of riding ontop, I'd love for the Asura to ride inside. Like we saw from one video where the Asura pops out the top of the golem when you defeat him. I think it'd fit perfectly.

    I believe that's a racial ability

That may have originally been an idea for a racial ability/CD back when that video was made.

Wow is for the most part open world but even they split it into chunks. Ever had eastern kingdoms go down due to a big raid on stormwind? the whole thing drops at once but the other "Zones" like kalimdor/northrend/outland are just fine. If the world was a bit more closed chances are said raid would only crash stormwind but most of the other zones would still be up. Thats one of the tradeoffs between a closed and open world that must be ballenced.
I just believe the benefits of an large, connected and semless World far outweigh the benefits of instanced zoning.

I'm not sure why ANet chose to go with this option as GW1 already featured excellent world streaming technology.

Maybe they're doing it in order to get by with less servers.

This has been talked about a lot throughout this thread:

The maps or zones in GW2 are much bigger than zones in WoW, developers said it can take about 15 minutes to walk between zones in a straight line. One of the zones that was played in during the GDC demo looked like it was the size of hellfire and zangarmarsh combined. There are portals between zones or other places which have been shown in some demo videos.

    http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Portal

The world in GW2 is still open and persistent it just isn't seamless. WoW has barriers / portals between zones as well, you just can't see them, which was Blizzards choice to make the world look seamless. If you ever got disconnected transitioning to another zone or couldn't log in because the world server was down, it was because that zone was down or having issues. Currently there are portals in the game, but you won't be going through them very often.

    Known places for portals:
    - Main cities
    - Between zones
    - Home instance

This could all change though since the game is in alpha/beta stage and they could just be place holders, but I think they will be in the game. Yes there is new technology, but there will be many dynamic events running in each zone which will have to support a bunch of players. Since players can scale down to do events, the zones maybe highly populated even after people have hit max level. If you look at WoW most places are dead zones except where main cities are and the 81-85 zones.

I agree, WoW does it just fine (for the most part)

    With today's technology I don't see why they wouldn't

I kind of hope that they kind of add lore to the portals in different zones...like, you see some asura holding the barrier up with some kind of magic or whatever to protect the area from the dangers behind it, and stuff like that, that way it adds a bit of flavor to the mechanic of separating the large zones by portals and etc

WoW zones also crash when there's a lot of people in a small area. I think that's partially why Blizzard has moved away from large server events. Hopefully Arena.net is doing this to lessen the stress on servers when there are a ton of people doing a dynamic event (ie. the Shatterer). I'll take a portal every so often if I can experience lag free and large scale dynamic events.

Wintergrasp use to crash all the time and would be really laggy at times and the zone wasn't even that big. I much rather take a portal once in a while between zones than have laggy zones that crash.

But you won't take portals because of map travel

Guys I have two questions concerning Guild Wars 2:

    1) Is there any point in playing GW1 until GW2 is out? For example, learning to play, gaining achievements etc..
    2) Can a game that is restricted to 5-man content (like GW2) be 'truly epic'? And, if yes, is GW2 such a game?

    Thanks
