I looked for an answer to this but couldn't find anything concrete. Mainly, I want to get a feel of the game's world, lore and aesthetic. So should I get into it, or just read wikis, and wait for GW2?

    Thanks you
I liked GW1 a lot but it's a very different game than most - even at the time it was released. That said, I played the game for many years.

If you're looking to do HoM stuff for those rewards, it's very possible to get 30/50 within a month or two just playing normally across all campaigns + expansion. These HoM rewards won't have any sort advantage over GW2 stuff so it's alright to miss them. They are mostly a throwback for GW1 players on having nostalgic or old aesthetic weapons from the first game. So don't feel pressured that these will give you any stat advantage. (You can check out the rewards here too: http://hom.guildwars2.com/en/)

If you're just looking for the lore, I think reading wiki's will suffice for most people. You'll miss some of the reasons why cities are there in the first place in GW2 but gist of it will be understood. (and you might miss out why Asurans call people bookahs :P)

A great quick readup of the setting for GW2 can be found here: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/The_...t_of_the_World Which tells the story of the world in a general sense. I suppose clicking around through the links should tell you what you need to know lorewise going into GW2.

The game is only $30 for all three games + $10 for the expansion so it isn't bad for the wallet.

Oh and if you're interested in the lore, definitely check out the books Ghosts of Ascalon and Edge of Destiny.

I'm playing GW1 - great story, and I really love the missions, but the last couple of days . . . the language I've been throwing at my henchmen, heroes, and the stupid empty zones you have to fight through . . . aaaargh.

But if you have a little patience (unlike me, apparently) it's definitely worth trying. Plus, the community seems nice.

the only thing we know about guilds in GW2:
    - there will be out-of-the-game guild chat via webbrowser
    - there will be guild achievements
    - you can have multiple characters in multiple guilds

  6. #5686
Hope there will be guild coats. A gang with same "tag" would be cool.

Question: Is the story of Guild Wars 2 different from Guild Wars 1?

If yes, then why didn't they just continue and keep making expansions for Guild Wars 1?

Of course it's different. GW2 takes place 250 years after the events of GW1.
The reason for going for GW2 is that there were so much stuff ArenaNet wanted to do but the current engine of GW1 couldn't accomplish them.

    Edit: typo!

GW2 takes place 250 years after events of GW1.

They stopped making expansions because they felt the engine was limiting them and they wanted to get rid of the whole instancing thing in GW1 and make a full-fledged MMO.

Now since this game focuses more on single player story, is it recommended if I go play Guild Wars 1 where I will most likely not care about it due to the outdated gameplay/story/everything or just read the story online on Guild Wars 2 website?

Given how cheap GW1 is, you might as well get it. I think actually playing through it does give you a stronger sense of the world. I mean, you can read about the Char and the humans, but actually seeing the story unfold makes it more "real" (well, it does to me). Plus any story is likely to just be an overview, whereas playing it you get the little details, some of which will be reflected in GW2 (e.g. if you've played Prophecies you know who Duke Baradin is, whereas if you just go straight to GW2 he's just some random ghost)

Edit: shop around though. I managed to get all 3 campaigns and EOTN for under £20 total. At that sort of price, even if you only play through each one once, you've still got great value for money.

Read the story online. As the game takes place 250 years after GW1, "all" characters from GW1 are dead and the only reference comes through some monuments, graves or deranged ghosts. Eg. in Charr tutorial you fight a ghost of Duke Barradin. For GW2 players new to GW it will be "cool, a boss", for GW1 players it will be "cool, finally I can kill that GW1 guy". So it's not like it's exactly important to play the first game.

About a year ago I heard of Guild Wars 2, I didn't care.

6 months ago I saw some videos, I thought meh.

3 months ago, me and my friend said to eachother "let's not get hyped up and get dissapointed as much as we did with other mmo's (Warhammer/Aion)"

Today I'm sitting here like a 5 year old boy waiting for his christmas present, GW2 simply looks perfect and amazing. Definately buying this game, I just can't login to WoW anymore because everytime I do I end up going to youtube to watch some more GW2 videos realising how crap WoW actually is.

Thanks GW2 for ruining for WoW me, you better be good!

PS: Since the discussion seems to be about classes... I'm going to roll either a Charr Warrior (DAYUM I love them slashin'!) or a ranger, not sure about the race yet. Can't decide, ill have to flip a coin I'm afraid.

Haha :P I can't wait either after seeing this. Though i will have to decide wether i'm going human or charr, I'm going Human if the model is nice Charr looks epic too but not really Thief-ish

Though, how does the name system work? I heard you need a spacebar in it?

So it must be like: Tenkachii the great? :P like give you a title already? Or just your real name: For instance : Tenka Chii

You needed some kind of surname in GW1, but they've gotten rid of that concept entirely for GW2. So you can have just Tenkachii if you want.
