    PEMDAS: Order of Operations....

    P: Parenthasis ()
    E: Exponent ^2
    M: Multiplication (M and D
    D: Division share the same rank and are EQUAL)
    A: Addition (A and S
    S: Subtraction share the same rank and are EQUAL)

    Therefore in order of ranks,

    1, Parenthasis
    2, Exponent
    3, Multiplication and Division
    4, Addition and Subtraction.

    Therefore 6/2(1+2)
    6/2(3)
    6/2*3
    3*3
    9

    When there are two or more operations that can be done that are Multiplication and Division (or Addition and Subtraction) you simply do them in order - one doesnt have priority over the other. So you calculate the 6/2 BEFORE the 2*3.

    The answer is 9 acording to wolfram alpha.

    No, it says you need to take it 6/2 times. Division and multiplication are done from left to right, so you have to do the 6/2 first, then you multiply it by the stuff in the brackets.

    According to the parenthesis, its 9. Period. LOL i dont even know how can people argue its 1, have you ever been to school ? xD

    6/2(1+2) is NOT 6/(2(1+2)).
    6/2(1+2) = 6/2 . (1+2) = 3.3 = 9
    6/(2(1+2))= 6/(2.3)=1

    That's all. No more no less. The answer is 9.

    Thank you.

    I see alto of valid points here, both for 9 and 1. I myslef would go for 1, considering how the OP wrote it. And ofcourse considering my Shart gave me a 1

    With this order of priority, 6/2(1+2), the (1+2) must be added first. Once you add this and get 3, you then multiply the 2 by the 3 (Multiplication is before Division in priority in PEMDAS.) Finally, divide 6 by 6 giving you 1.

    I'm 6 years old and got this problem correct.
    i'd like to have a word with your mother, young man.

    BIDMAS = Brackets, Indices (none in this equation), Division and Multiplication (Start on the left and work them out in the order that you find them), Addition and Subtraction (again working from the left in the order you find them).

    In the OP this sum is written as 6/2(1+2).

    6/2(1+2) = x
    6/2(3) = x, 6/2 first here, since it's the first one you find when starting on the left, and 6/2 = 3
    3(3) = x
    9 = x
    x = 9

    So 9.

    Some people don't understand that Division and Multiplication should be done on the same priority, not Division > Multiplication, you just work from the left and do them as you find them.

    May I ask why you ignore the brackets? They should be done before anything else.

    Chuck it in Excel, as that is where the majority of maths in the real world is done (outside of trigonometry and folding on 3d cards).

    A better way of writing this would be using a division line;

    6
    ---------
    2(1+2)

    6
    ---
    6

    = 1

    Anyone that doesn't realize this should go back to school and learn to shorten parentheses.
    But that is not how it was written. In it's form as it was written it is 9. Trying to find an old text book with a similar equation.

    after thinking again i think 6÷2(1+2)= over 9000

    This is not about PEDMAS, BEDMAS, left-to-right, right-to-left or whatever you have learned, but about mathematical notation.
    A number before a parenthesis like in 2(1+2) is just a shortened form of writing 2*(1+2). The lack if this is what confuses people.
    Therefore:
    6÷2(1+2) = 6÷2*(1+2) = (6÷2)*(1+2)

    Division is actually the same as multiplication, so 6÷2 is the same as 6*2^(-1). (But I need not use this [yet?])

    So, 6÷2(1+2) = 6÷2*(1+2) = 6÷2*3 = 3*3 = 9.

    If it was 6÷(2(1+2)) (which it is not, but is what people think it is) it would have been 1 instead of 9.
