I don't see why (: being for hipsters. In fact, I'd think hipsters wouldn't even be texting, it's too mainstream.

I don't use that smiley to begin with as when I first saw that smiley often it was being used by sarcastic sons of female dogs to express the fact they were being sarcastic, a lot.

The only smiley I do mouth first is D: because it's the only good crying smiley. I always use : for eyes over =, because nobody has eyes that tall, and I never use - for a nose, because it looks stupid.
