It's not being thick headed. Why on earth would blizzard make an entire expansion on something that was initially a joke? It was an april fool's joke. I think they're focusing on trying to bring in new players that don't know much about WoW or warcraft, than worrying about the people that are actually playing it. Pandas are cute, who doesn't like Panda's right? Pandas=mass appeal.
You do realize the exact same statement can be said about the dranei? Where it was a huge retcon and Metzen was like JK we changed the story dranei are good guys LOL. Ogres would be even more ridiculous, they're idiots. Cho'gall is the only powerful one and he was empowered by C'thun and twisted and deformed to where he wasn't similar to an ogre anymore. Like really it makes no sense to have ogres.
Honestly, Pandarians are defiantly on the wish list of many wow players! My self, obviously, included. But even if they don't put it in, I know that what ever they put out, you will be able to take it seriously. Panda people are a lot easier to take seriously then the explosion obsessed goblins. I even have a hard time taking them seriously! And what about the Tuskar, walrus people? I know they are not playable, but they did have a big roll in 3 zones of wrath. Now there is a thought, Pandas for the Alliance, and Tuskar for the horde.....I hope not, I want the pandas for the horde!
Protip: Pandaren have MORE LORE than the Draenei did before they became a race. Heck, I don't even think an uncorrupted race of Draenei was even thought to exist before they were announced.
So people using the lack of lore as a reasoning, there's that. On top of that, the Worgen lore was pretty much completely rewritten to bring them to the alliance, same with new lore for a completely new cartel of goblins being written to bring them to the horde.
Blizzard can do what they want. If they want us to have Pandaren, we'll get pandaren. If they want us to have a half zebra, half vulture race, we'll get that. \
Maybe they are just early with their april fools joke this year.
Preparing for 2012 :P
Tom Chilton dodging the question when asked about it? That other guy who was interviewed who said "it may be something we talk about at Blizzcon" ?
I hope you're right, but I wouldn't put my money on it not being the next expansion. I know people like to get all melodramatic about quitting WoW but if it really is a panda-themed expansion this will be the end of the line for me.

Just wanted to throw a thing out there, this mention of a 'Scenario' for Alcaz Island in the post of 2011-07-03, no mention by Blizzard has been made about this thing yet and we already now much of what 4.3 will be about.
Is it possible that those 'scenarios' are going to be a new kind of encounter different from Raids, and Dungeons. One that will be introduced as a selling point of Mists of Pandaria.
There are several reasons to believe it would actually be the case, as much as Pandarens are cool, just adding a race, or even a class is likely not enough in MY opinion to sell back the game to all the subscribers who have left. Blizzards probably knows it and knows that their audience is bored of the same old same old (grinding, raids, arena, dur dur), and a recent trend of the MMO industry, introduced by Rifts and pushed further by GW2 and their dynamic Event System, is dynamic 'questing/content'.
Those scenario could be Blizzard trying to introduce something new in Mists of Pandaria, if it's actually confirmed as the next xpac. The possibilities for what it could be are endless, 2-players mini dungeon, something akin to rifts in... Rifts, or something like the battle for the troll's starting zone before Cata (forgot the name). Where Rifts decided to reduce the emphasis on their dynamic contents in favor the WoW model of raids, raids, raids, Blizzard could surprise everyone and announce some kind of dynamic content that could even steal the thunder of GW2's Event System. That sound to me like a valid strategy to bring back the players who have left.
Now, I think it would be a good idea to see if further info have been leaked about those 'scenarios', it could probably be nothing, or it could be one of the major features of the next expansion right under our noses. If we are lucky we might hear some interesting stuffs at Blizzcon this year.

WoW: Kung Fu Panda. I'd pay for that.
Woah, how'd they just do a smiley with less than 10 characters!?
OT: You think since Blizzard isn't gonna mention Titan at this years Blizz-con, they might mention something about Mists of Pandaria instead? I mean, D3 is in full beta now, and Heart of the swarm is gonna be a big ticket, but do you think that's all they'll put? Will they have 2 lousy conventions in a row?
The  emote is in fact exactly 10 characters long
And well, they will definitely announce the next expansion, since Cataclysm will "end" after 4.3 and a following non-major-number event patch (mentioned by Chilton in some interview) and I don't think they'd delay the announcement to a later, third-party convention/press event, not to forget that the previous expansions were announced at BlizzCons as well - coincidentally, BC was 2005, WotLK 2007, Cata 2009, and now is 2011. (Though I expect the next announcement in 2012 already, as they are planning shorter expansions)
Whether this expansion will be "Mists of Pandaria" or not, we will see...

But your duty to Azeroth is not yet complete. More is demanded of you... a price the living cannot pay.
