high elves had and now have again the sunwell as their source of power, thats why they didn't need to build up a broad religion for the people. the difference to those people who worship the holy light or other things is, that they dont have a huge source of power for everyone. think about stormwind, its not full of mages majority of the population there is non magical, thats why they need the faith.

high elves being a long with humans and dwarves since long long time ago, thats where they've learned to embrace the holy light. While this philosophy does not penetrate deeply into high elven society, those who do follow the path of the Holy Light are much more approachable than most.

I was under the assumption that the Blood Elves gave up on everything associated with the Alliance, including the Light, while the remaining high elves instead embraced the Light further. Arator's paladin-ness was merely a function of his human ancestry.

Arator was a high elf. He has green eyes because his mother, Alleria, was a green-eyed high elf.

The blood elves didn't really turn their back on the Light. Well... they did at first, but Liadrin has been shown as converting back to the Light, and Creative Development stated that she's been enforcing reforms through the order to bring Light-worship back into the Blood Knights' MO.

Right. What I meant was: Arator got his paladin-ness from his dad (which I also assumed to be Turalyon). And that the reason the Blood Elves lost their Light-granted powers was due to their turning away from Alliance ideals (like the Light). Changed post-Sunwell, of course, but maybe I missed the point of discussion.

It wasn't that the elves turned their back on the light, so much as they felt the light had turned their back on the elves.

All their powers of the arcane as well as the light were completely useless against the scourge corruption of the Sunwell and then after the events of the Sunwell the official cannon is that the elves had been rendered almost entirely powerless.

So when Kael captured MuRu some of the former Paladins decided that if the light would not give them power that they would simply take it. So they studied and learned how to siphon the light from MuRu and it's not until you get to Outland that you find out the Naaru have been working behind the scenes to restore the forgotten faith and powers of the high/blood-elven peoples.

the real question you should be asking is why people care about the lore in this game

Clearly the correct play here is to drop acid everyday.
Just because you can't easily overdose on acid doesn't mean that dropping 50 hits in a night won't turn you into a drooling retard.

Blood elves were in the alliance too, Kael'thas initially reconnected with the Night Elves, who were not part of the alliance at the time. However a certain worthless bastard named Garithos, and this "new alliance" however pushed them out through constant belittling, racism, and insult. He belittled the blood elves, the dwarves and anyone else who wasn't human. Thrall accepted them in, with Sylvanas being the one pushing for their entry since they had no were else to turn and Sylvanas still felt the anguish of her people's suffering (then being the Blood elves still). Without the alliance to help would've surely perished in the ensuing chaos of the third war.

The blood elves were considering the Alliance all the way up until the Ghostlands questing experience, where the night elves basically screwed that pooch, first with the spies (Darnassian Scout and Prospector Anvilward), then by holding strategic choke points and attack points that could have been put to devastating use against the Scourge, and attacking any blood elf they see on sight. On the flip side, Sylvanas acts on behalf of the Horde by sending enough Forsaken troops in for them to keep the Scourge bottled up in Deatholme until a few enterprising blood elves and Horde mercenaries swing on by and clear the place out and kill Dar'khan, solidifying the blood elves' decision to throw their lot in with the Horde.

that was after the third war however. the night elves weren't part of the alliance until after the battle on Hyjal. After Kael'thas sided with Illidan and the Naga and went to Outland, the Night Elves had no love for the blood elves at all (though initially they were friendly), which is why they began spying and being openly hostile towards them. Kael'thas almost instantly sided with Illidan and the Naga after dealing with Garithos. Ghostlands events are taking place when Kael is in outland, and the Draenei have already told the alliance what has been happening; what the Blood Elves have been doing.

    Arator is a half elf.
