    AmD socket am2/am2+/am3 backwards compatible

Saw someone on another forum post that a am2 style processor such as a athlonx2 5000 can be used on the newer motherboards with the am3 chipset.

Mainly wanted to know if it is true and if their is any wattage limitations (If I recall correctly Amd has produced 125w/95w/65w/45w Cpu's since the inception of the original am2 standard

In short I am looking to slowly upgrade my system piece by piece over the next year my current specs are
    M2n-Sli motherboard (4gb pc6400 ddr2)
    Athlonx2 5000 series 2.8ghz duel core
Evga GT 520 video card (this won't be replaced for awhile as it is brand new)
650 watt Sli ready Antec power Supply (not a upgrade priority unless other new hardware requires it)

AMD confirmed that there is an upgrade path from Socket AM2+ to AM3:

AM3 processors work on AM2+ motherboards due to the presence of both the DDR2 and DDR3 memory controllers on the processor
AM2+ processors do not work on AM3 motherboards due to the processor's lack of a DDR3 memory controller

Will DDr2 modules work With a AM3 motherboard or processor.

Replacing the Motherboard/Cpu/Ram modules at the same time can get rather costly which sucks because I am not likely to have anymore than $300 to blow on parts at any given time (not until Tax returns in April anyway)

Well that and I would be tempted to swap to a intel chipset so I would end up with some very low end upgrades

DDR2 RAM can't work with an AM3 motherboard because they have DDR3 slots.
If you have an AM2+ motherboard and DDR2 RAM, you can put an AM3 CPU without a problem. It might require a BIOS upgrade though.

Check for cpu support through the motherboard manufacturer's website prior to purchasing the CPU. While it should be supported they're often not.
