Just to note, but it should be said that Digimon and Pokemon came out a few months apart, after spending years in development. Neither one is a rip off of the other, they just share the -mon suffix.

Digimon still came out after pokemanz(as far as I remember) and being a kid back then, I just saw it as a rip-off where every monsters name ended with -mon. I was like well this is stupid.

Some of the later ones looked a lot better than Purrugly or Clefable. WarGreymon is great example. Game wise, Pokemon will be better since it was designed for that from the get go. Anime wise on the other hand, Digimon is far superior since the Pokemon anime is simply a 22 minute advertisement for the games whereas Digimon actually had a season long narrative to go by. To be honest, I've never really been into Digimon either, though I don't hate it. I enjoyed the first couple seasons of the show, but nothing else.
And the evolutions and stuff do confuse me. I just looked up Agumon - he has 12 different variations/subspecies. He evolves from 4 other Digimon, and then has 43 evolutions (a few of which have their own unique evolutions, and most of them probably have variatons/subspecies).

Before the english name was revealed we called them "Baycon" "Smugleaf" and "Wotter." I like the fan names better.
