    Yet Another Computer Thread

But this one's (slightly) different! At my school, seniors have to do a Senior Project, which can basically be anything related to a future career you may or may not want. You have to find someone in that career field and have them mentor you too.

Anyways, i thought for mine I'd build a computer. Never done it before, but it's something I've always really wanted to do. My mentor is a really cool guy at a very popular computer repair shop in town. So I'm learning all sorts of stuff about repair, security, maintenance, etc... He showed me some websites he regularly buys parts off of, and told me last time I met up with him to do some independent research, and basically try to figure out what parts to get on my one. I have about a $600-$700 budget, and it's mainly for games.

Now, the main thing here is this guy is really damn smart, and I don't want to look stupid in front of him. So I'm coming here as a way to kind of proof my setup. I've never done this before, so if something is incompatible with something else, or there's a way better alternative for much cheaper or something like that, please let me know.

    Thanks!

So here it is: (note: I used Tiger Direct. That's what was recommended to me by him. If there's a better place to buy parts, I'd love to know.)

    CASE: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&sku=C283-3122
    POWER SUPPLY: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...6&sku=C13-2800
    HARD DRIVE: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&sku=TSD-500ST
    MOBO: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&sku=G452-1035
    RAM: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...8&sku=C19-6149
    CPU: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...8&sku=A79-0700
    VIDEO CARD: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&sku=H231-6570

So how's it look? Anything need to be changed/added/tossed, whatever?

    Thanks in advance.

Newegg.com is typically cheaper, and is in direct competition with TD. Might want to check NCIX as well, they just opened shop in the us.

    hdd1Samsung Spinpoint 1TB – $59.99

My recommended change to HDD - better drive, more storage.

That processor is horrible for gaming.

If you choose to go AMD, you want the 980 BE

Else, I would highly recommend, for a budget system, an i3 2100. This will require a motherboard change for socket.

    moboMsi H67 – $74.99
    cpuIntel i3 2100 – $124.99

The 6570 is not a gaming card.

For a dedicated gaming card, you can't really stoop too far below $150 ish without taking a hit. Lowest I would recommend is a

    6950

If you'd like any other comments/feedback let us know.

PS - you can step your PSU all the way down to about 450w (stay with an 80+ unit, antec has some good PSUs in that range)

Also, as a note - If you have a Micro Center near you, there's a FANTASTIC deal on the i5 2500k and P67 motherboard combos. 2500k on sale for 180, and $50.00 off a mobo when you buy together. And it's the best processor out for gaming. Just food for thought.

Thanks a lot man, I'll look into it. Like I said, I don't really know much right now, still just trying to learn.

Not gonna hurt getting something specific to your needs as opposed to a general recommendation

Do you need an operating system, monitor, keyboard, or mouse? If not:
