it may look good to you this way since you know the whole image, but to everyone else it just looks weird
you could also just do a little 30° tilt and crop out the new square at that position. i did that with another picture for an avatar a while back and it looked pretty good. still in the lying-on-se-bedz-or-whatever-position, but not quite as weird without the whole image.
and since i'm already going at "giving Remi avatar tips she probably won't use anyway", i also like to individually highlight (contrast, lighting, saturation, sharpness, etc) the eyes on cute faces, since they tend to lose a bit on such low resolutions and sizes, imo^^
oh also, increasing the sharpness alltogether is usually a good idea too, although obviously not too much. at about 0.3 or 0.4 pixels and 40-70% or so it makes the pic look more defined, while still retaining most of it's softness :)
i'd show you what i mean, but for that i'd need the original picture, otherwise the border's gonna look really awkward.
