It occurred to me just after I posted that that the connection would be made. Though I suppose relations would be inhibited what with rays of death and petrification being fired off everywhere (not to mention teleportation ones)

This makes me a lot more uncomfortable about choosing to raid the Beholder lair in Baldur's Gate 2 instead of the Illithid settlement :/

Yeah, it was the shield of Balduran, so it'd basically be an artifact in relative power. It was completely gamebreaking because it basically meant any section of the game involving Beholders was a complete bore - just give the shield to a fighter and go AFK while they proceed to stomp everything in their path.
